Death Valley의 신비스런 숯가마

칼리포니아 동남쪽 사막지대의 고산에 위치한 이곳 사진을 LIFE지에서 보고 가보기로

마음 먹고서도 3-4년 후에나 찾아 간것은 그 만큼 가기가 힘든 곳이다.

무더위로 일단 찾아 가는 시기가 10월에서 4월초순까지가 알맞다.

Death Valley 서쪽 산속에 위치한 신비스러운 숫가마 일명 Charcoal Kilns는 이곳에서 30 마일 떨어진 Modock Mine에서 숫을 사용키 위하여 스위스 엔지니어가 설계하고 중국인들에 의하여 1879년에 만들어졌고 3년간 사용한후 지금까지 방치되여 있다.

이곳을 가기 위해선 비포장 도로이기에 4 X 4WD를 권한다.

입구를 둥글게 돌로 쌓은 형태가 동양에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 양식이다.

숫가마 안에서...

앞산에 눈들이 그냥 있다.

4월인데 주위의 Rosepeak이 2763m이니 이곳도 2,000m가 족히 되리라.

숯가마 안에서... 얼마나 큰가를 알 수 있다.

사용한지 125년 이상 되였고 앞,뒷문이 항상 열려 있었건만 아직도 숫냄새가 난다.

지독하게 나는것이 아니라 옛날 시골 부억에서 맡던 정겨운 그 냄새였다.

나 처럼 호기심이 많은 사람들이 이 더운 날씨에 여기까지 먼지를 길게 꼬리 물고 왔다.

주차된 차량에 비하여 사람이 적은것을 보니 주위산으로 등반을 간 모양이다.
