It’s the college season and many American high school students and parents are focused on college acceptance letters, and so was I. My oldest daughter is currently completing her senior year of high school and the past few weeks have been a very nervous time for her and our whole family.
This week I was excited to read in the news that Joyce Kim was elected to be Student Body President at the University of Pennsylvania, my alma mater, and that she was the first female student at UPenn to be elected president.

Congrats to Joyce Kim for being elected as Student Body President!
I was excited to see this for many reasons. First, it is always nice to see bright, capable women rising to the top and assuming leadership positions. As a Korean-American, I am very proud to see a Korean-American student in that role for the first time in the university’s history. This is also exciting for me because my daughter will be joining UPenn this fall. One of Joyce Kim’s initiatives is to help integrate international students into college life. My daughter shouldn’t need help with this, but as someone who has lived abroad, hopefully she can help her fellow international students adjust. Some of them no doubt will be from Korea since over 70,000 Korean students study in the U.S. per year.

With my daughter Erin
I welcome any advice for my daughter on how to adjust to college life, as well as any for me on how not to miss her too much. Hopefully we will hear from her often and get to see her on the same campus I once tread.
