DIANE
SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(OC): Across the country, families are heading out for the
holiday weekend. And a lot of them will
return home without their suitcases. Thousands
of bags go
missing
everyday at airports and people never find them or pick them up. It creates a
mountain of opportunity. ABC's Lindsey Davis explains how someone
else's loss
could be your gain.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): MIA, not only an acronym
for Miami International Airport, but missing in
action. Laptops, cameras, bikes, all
kinds of luggage
left in
the lurch. This is where it comes to die. Only
the headstones
in this cemetery
are all unmarked. None of these bags have id.
MARK
HENDERSON (SPOKESMAN FOR MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT): We're not a storage bin,
so after 60 day's, it's like, okay, it's
time to have
an auction.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Every year about 10,000 bags go missing here in
Miami. And last year the airport made
about $100,000 in lost luggage auctions.
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): This is the Mecca of lost luggage, Linsey.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Billy LeRoy this is one of the stars of the Travel
Channel show "Baggage Battles."
But this is no ordinary auction.
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): You see the key thing is you cannot open
these bags.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(OC): So what's the art here?
How do you detect the hidden treasures?
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): Well I have my famous test and that's the
smell test. I smell it first.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Come auction day, bidders pay
3 dollars to play
in this standing
room only
game…
BIDDER
(MIAMI) $5.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): …of finders keepers.
AUCTIONEER
(MIAMI): Sold, $100.
LINSEY DAVIS
(ABC NEWS)(VO): Billy's used his
gut instinct
to come up big before,
like these rare coins he found.
APPRAISER
(MALE): This is worth at least a thousand pounds.
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): What?
APPRAISER
(MALE): Yeah.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): The two grand he spent included this bag.
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): Momma.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Disappointment for Billy and for anyone who forgets to fill out a luggage tag.
BILLY
LEROY ("BAGGAGE BATTLES"): Look at that? There's no name. So whoever owned this bag, you should have
marked your bag.
LINSEY
DAVIS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Lindsay Davis, ABC News, Miami.
