솔직히 말해서

나는 그 가게에 다시 가고 싶지 않았습니다.

To be honest,

I wasn't happy to be making another trip to the store.

 지난 4주 동안 나와 내 아내는

불량 냉장고를 반품하고 환불받으려고 애써 왔습니다.

For the previous 4 weeks,

my wife and I had been trying to get a refund

for a bad refrigerator.

또 다시 그 상점 지배인과 얘기하는 동안

우리는 또 다른 막다른 길로 접어든 듯한 느낌이 들었습니다.

As I spoke with the manager-again

-it seemed that

we were heading down another dead-end road.

서로 이야기하면서 나는 과연 돈을 환불받을 수 있을까 걱정이 되었지만,

계속 정중하려고 애썼습니다.

As we talked,

I wondered if we would ever get our money back,

but I tried to be gracious.

그러던 어느 순간 그가

“이쯤 되면 고객들은 보통 저에게 소리를 지르는데

고객님들은 아주 참을성이 많으시네요.”라고 말하고는,

“다른 방법으로 해봅시다.”라고 말했습니다.

At one point the manager said,

"By now, customers are usually yelling at me,

but you've been so patient."

Then he said, "Let's try something else."

그는 몇 가지를 더 물어보고는 현금등록기에 어떤 숫자들을 입력했습니다.

He asked me some questions and

punched some numbers into a cash register.

화를 내는 손님들에 대한 이야기를 나누면서 약간의 시간이 흐른 후에,

그 기계는 환불 영수증을 뱉어냈습니다.

After a short delay-and some stories about irate customers

-the machine spit out a receipt showing a refund!

가전제품에 대한 우리의 악몽은 이제 끝이 났습니다.

Our appliance nightmare was over.

그는 우리가 떠날 때에

“함께 문제를 해결할 수 있도록 아주 친절하게 해주셔서 감사합니다.”라고 말했습니다.

"Thanks for being so good to work with,"

 he said as we parted ways.

나는 친절하게 하고 싶지 않을 때 친절하게 했던 것이

이번의 경우에 도움이 되었다고 생각하지만,

환불을 받기 위해서 우리가 다른 사람들을 친절하게 대해야 하는 것은 아닙니다.

While I think being nice

when I didn't feel nice helped in this process,

getting refunds is not

why we should show kindness to others.

진짜 이유는

그리스도인으로서 우리는 예수님의 빛을 모든 사람에게 비추어야 하기 때문입니다

(엡 5:8).

The real reason is

that as Christians we are to reflect the light of Jesus on everyone

그것이 화가 난 이웃이거나, 실수를 연발 하는 웨이터이거나,

아니면 백화점 지배인이라도 말입니다.

-whether it's an irate neighbor, a bumbling waiter,

or a department store manager.

우리의 언어와 행동은 긍정적인 간증이 되어야 합니다(엡 4:29-32; 골 4:6)

Our speech and behavior are to be a positive witness.

Ephesians 에베소서 5:1-10  

[엡] 5:1	그러므로 사랑을 받는 자녀 같이 너희는 하나님을 본받는 자가 되고 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
[엡] 5:2	그리스도께서 너희를 사랑하신 것 같이 너희도 사랑 가운데서 행하라 그는 우리를 위하여 자신을 버리사 향기로운 제물과 희생제물로 하나님께 드리셨느니라 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
[엡] 5:3	음행과 온갖 더러운 것과 탐욕은 너희 중에서 그 이름조차도 부르지 말라 이는 성도에게 마땅한 바니라 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
[엡] 5:4	누추함과 어리석은 말이나 희롱의 말이 마땅치 아니하니 오히려 감사하는 말을 하라 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
[엡] 5:5	너희도 정녕 이것을 알거니와 음행하는 자나 더러운 자나 탐하는 자 곧 우상 숭배자는 다 그리스도와 하나님의 나라에서 기업을 얻지 못하리니 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person- -such a man is an idolater- -has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
[엡] 5:6	누구든지 헛된 말로 너희를 속이지 못하게 하라 이로 말미암아 하나님의 진노가 불순종의 아들들에게 임하나니 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient.
[엡] 5:7	그러므로 그들과 함께 하는 자가 되지 말라 Therefore do not be partners with them.
[엡] 5:8	너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
[엡] 5:9	빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
[엡] 5:10	주를 기쁘시게 할 것이 무엇인가 시험하여 보라 and find out what pleases the Lord.

As people of the Lord we're called To follow in His way; And then all those who watch our lives Will see Him on display. People are attracted to Christ when you shine His light from your life.

우리는 주님의 백성으로 그분의 길을 따르라는 소명을 받았네 그리하면 우리 삶을 지켜보는 모든 이들이 주님의 모습을 볼 수 있다네 삶으로 그리스도의 빛을 비추는 사람이 다른 사람들을 그리스도께 인도한다.
