@스콜라리가 첼시의 공격진 문제를 해결한 것일까?

이 칼럼을 꾸준히 읽어 온 독자라면 아직 날씨가 차지기 전 필자가 루이스 펠리페 스콜라리 감독의 첼시가 추운 겨울이 되면 본격적인 시험에 들게 될 것이라고 예측한 것을 기억할 것이다.

여름과 가을을 지나는 동안 스콜라리의 첼시는 좋은 분위기를 타고 있었다. 열정적인 스콜라리는 영국 언론들에게 매력적이었고 팀 또한 승승장구했기 때문이다. 하지만 – 모든 영국인들과 마찬가지로 – 햇살을 몇 주 동안이나 제대로 볼 수 없는 시기가 오면서 스콜라리는 기력을 잃어가고 있다.

감독이 패기를 잃으면 팀의 훈련이 느슨해지게 된다. 팀 훈련이 느슨해지면 선수들은 일상 속에서 흥미를 잃는다. 이것이 첼시를 강타한 무기력의 과정이다.

물론 첼시가 이전 시즌들에 비해 단단해 보이지 않는 데에는 여러 기술적 이유들이 존재한다. 스콜라리 지휘 하의 포르투갈 역시 세트피스 상황에서 약점을 노출했으며 이런 점은 첼시에서도 반복되는 듯 하다.

스콜라리 스타일의 다소 여유 있는 훈련은 연속적으로 경기가 이어지는 대표팀과 국제대회에서는 효과적인 것으로 보인다. 강력한 공격과 단단한 수비보다는 마법과 같은 기술로 경기를 지배하는 브라질이나 포르투갈 스타일의 축구 역시 이에 적합하다. 하지만 선수들이 강한 압박 속에서 매일 매일 발전하고 향상되는 잉글랜드 클럽의 분위기에서 이런 훈련방식은 적합하지 않다.

존 테리와 프랑크 람파드는 이미 날카로움이 결여된 올 시즌 첼시의 훈련방식에 대해 불만을 토로한 바 있다. 그리고 테리와 람파드가 불만을 가질 때 아브람 그란트의 사례처럼 첼시 감독들은 종종 곤경에 빠지곤 했다. 첼시는 선수들의 영향력이 전통적으로 매우 강한 팀이었기에 스콜라리는 선수들의 지적에 귀를 기울일 필요가 있다.

스콜라리가 첼시의 공격진 문제를 해결한 것일까? 독자들이라면 디디에 드로그바와 니콜라 아넬카 기용의 딜레마을 어떻게 풀 것인가? 필자는 해답을 알고 있다. 아넬카를 기용하고 드로그바를 내보내는 것이다. 이는 매우 간단한 결론이다.

시즌이 시작할 무렵 필자는 아넬카가 이번 시즌 득점왕을 차지할 것이라고 예상한 적이 있다. 아무도 이런 예측에 동의하지 않았다. 하지만 본인은 만일 충분한 출장기회만 주어진다면 아넬카가 얼마나 위력적일 지를 잘 알고 있었다. 그리고 당연하게도 현재 아넬카는 14골로 리그 수위를 달리고 있다.

그런데 어떤 일이 생겼는가? 드로그바가 팀에 복귀하고 아넬카는 그 주위를 맴돌게 되었다. 아넬카가 팀내 최다득점자라는 영광을 확정지었다고 생각했을 지도 모른다. 이는 사실이다. 하지만 스콜라리 감독은 공개적으로 공격의 원톱으로 드로그바를 선호한다는 사실을 밝힘으로써 아넬카의 기분을 망치고 말았다. 과거를 돌아보면 아넬카가 마음에 상처를 받았을 때 실력이 급격히 저하된다는 점은 이미 확인된 사실이다.

그럼 도대체 드로그바가 요즘 잘 하는 건 무엇인가? 물론 그가 세계에서 가장 완성된 재능 있는 축구선수들 중 하나임에는 분명하다. 한 가지는 빼고 말이다. 드로그바는 소속팀 첼시에 대한 열정과 만족을 더 이상 가지고 있지 않다.

행복감이 결여된 선수는 자신의 능력을 100% 보일 수 없다. 만일 필자가 스콜라리라면 드로그바를 1월 내에 팔아 치울 것이다. 그리고 아넬카에게 다가가 그가 세계 최고의 스트라이커라고 말해 주겠다. 그에 대해 완벽하게 신뢰하고 있으며 함께 프리미어 리그 우승을 위해 노력하자고 덧붙이며 말이다. 스콜라리가 이런 일을 할 수 있을까? 회의적이다. 필자가 보기에 스콜라리는 다른 이들의 기분까지 망칠 정도로 우울해져 있으며 이야말로 첼시의 가장 큰 문제점이라고 본다.

맨체스터 씨티에도 이런 문제가 존재하지만 그 양상은 반대다. 터프한 웨일즈인인 마크 휴즈 감독은 싸늘한 빗줄기나 눈, 구름 낀 어두운 하늘 속에서 햇살을 잃어버려도 꿈쩍하지 않는다. 하지만 브라질 출신인 호비뉴, 호, 엘라노 등은 우울함 속을 헤매이는 거 같다. 이 브라질 선수들의 자신들 만의 모임을 만든 듯 하며 이런 분열이 있을 경우 팀은 곤경에 빠지게 된다. 아마 엘라노는 아닐 수도 있겠지만 마크 휴즈 감독은 이들 브라질 선수들을 좀 더 편애하는 듯한 모습을 보여 왔다. 하지만 이 노력은 언제나 성공적이지는 않았으며 오히려 다른 선수들 사이의 불만감을 증폭시키는 것처럼 보인다.

맨씨티의 분위기가 좋지 않다는 것만은 확실하다. 선수들이 감독을 위해 전력을 다하지 않는 현재의 상황에서 마크 휴즈 감독은 위기에 처한 것으로 보인다. 만약 감독이 라커룸을 지배하지 못 한다면 그가 곧 끝장날 것이라는 것은 자명하다.

이적 시장이 맨씨티와 휴즈를 도와줄 수도 있을 것이다. 1,100만 파운드 규모의 웨인 브릿지 이적이 이미 성사되었으며, 더 많은 이적이 예상된다. 하지만 마크 휴즈 감독은 다섯 명의 새로운 선수가 필요한 바가 있으며 그를 위해선 1년 혹은 그 이상의 필요할 것이다. 그럼 마크 휴즈에게 그만큼의 시간이 주어질까? 부정적이다. 그는 맨씨티를 소유한 아랍 부호들에게 그가 잘 할 수 있음을 보여주어야만 한다. 그렇지 않으면 맨씨티는 새로운 선수들이 채 적응하기도 전에 강등의 수모를 겪을 지도 모른다. 소유주들은 이런 모험을 감수하지 않을 것이다. 그러므로 휴즈 감독은 겨울 동안 이들 브라질 선수들과 함께 겨울 내내 아슬아슬한 외줄타기를 해야만 할 것이다.

경질의 위험에서 벗어나 있는 이로는 풀럼의 로이 호지슨을 들 수 있다. 몇 주전 필자는 풀럼이 강등될 지도 모르며 스트라이커인 앤디 존슨을 곧 넣는 법을 잃어버린 것 같다고 적은 바가 있다. 마치 그 당시 필자의 지적이 틀렸다는 듯이, 풀럼은 이 후 거의 패배하지 않고 있으며 존슨 또한 꾸준히 득점을 해내고 있다! 일단 풀럼에 사과의 뜻을 전하며 특히 호지슨 감독이 계속 팀을 이끌 수 있게 된 것에 대해 기쁨을 표시하고 싶다. 그는 이탈리아에서 인터 밀란을 지도하던 시절부터 특파원으로서 그를 정기적으로 만났던 필자는 호지슨 감독이 얼마나 좋은 사람인지 잘 알고 있다.

과연 첼시와 맨씨티가 봄이 오기 전에 멋진 상승세를 보여줄 수 있을까? 이에 대해서는 회의적이지만 다른 한 가지 확실한 점이 있다. 이번 시즌은 유난히 그 전개가 흥미롭다는 사실이다! 마지막으로 한국의 모든 독자 분들께 새해 복 많이 받으시라는 말씀을 전한다.

Regular readers of this column will know that I warned way back during the warm British weather that the true test of Luiz Felipe Scolari's Chelsea would come in cold mid-winter. The same seems to apply to Manchester City too. Why? Brazilians and the British midwinter do not usually go well together.

Scolari's Chelsea was such a happy camp in the summer and autumn. The manager was charming the British media with his sparkling personality and the team was winning. But when a Brazilian doesn't see the sunshine for weeks on end - the fate of all of us on our island unfortunately - he loses some spirit.

When a manager loses his spirit, training loses some punch. When training loses some punch, the players stop enjoying their daily routine. It is this kind of knock-on effect that has hit Chelsea.

Yes, there are more technical reasons why Chelsea do not look as solid this season as they have in the past. Scolari's Portugal sometimes looked vulnerable to set plays and it seems he has taken this weakness to Chelsea too.

The relaxed nature of Scolari's training is good for a national side at big tournaments, where one match follows another in quick succession. It is good for the Brazilian or Portuguese mentailty, where the magic of football skill is more important than sheer hard work and solid defence. But it is not good for an English club, where players need to be pushed hard on a daily basis to improve and thrive.

John Terry and Frank Lampard are understood to have complained about the lack of a sharp edge to Chelsea traingin this year. And when Terry and Lampard are not happy, a manager is generally in trouble - just ask Avram Grant. Player power rules at Chelsea in the long run, so Scolari had better start listening.
Has he really resolved the issue of his strike-force? What would you have done about the Didier Drogba-Nicolas Anelka dilemma? I know what I would have done. Anelka in, Drogba out. It is as simple as that.

At the start of the season I tipped Anelka to be top scorer in the Premier League this season. No one else made that prediction. But I knew how good Anelka could be if given the platform to show his talent. Sure enough, Anelka raced to the top of the charts with 14 goals.

Then what happened? Drogba returned and Anelka had to work around him. Anelka probably thought he had done enough to earn the title of goal king at Stamford Bridge. I agree. Yet Scolari has messed with Anelka's mind by appearing to favour Drogba as his spearhead. History has shown that when you mess with Anelka's mind he goes downhill very fast.

So what is so great about Drogba these days? Sure, he is still a supremely talented footballer, one of the most complete players in the world today...except for one thing. He doesn't seem all that happy or passionate at Chelsea any more.

Without happiness, a player does not perform at 100 per cent. If I were Scolari, I would sell Drogba in this month of January. I would go back to Anelka and tell the Frenchman that he is the greatest striker in the world. I would tell Anelka that I have total faith in him and that together we are going to win the Premier League title. Will Scolari do all this? I doubt it? In my opinion the Brazilian manager isn't happy enough himself to make others happy right now. That could be Chelsea's biggest problem.

At Manchester City the same problem exists but in reverse. The manager, Mark Hughes, is a tough Welshman who doesn't mind freezing rain and snow or cloudy, soulless skies where sunshine is distant memory. But it is the Brazilian players such as Robinho, Jo and Elano who are unhappy. I believe they have formed a clique and when you have factions at clubs you are in trouble. With the possible exception of Elano, Mark Hughes has gone out of his way to try to keep the Brazilians on his side. It hasn't always worked and his efforts with the Brazilians may have caused jealousy and resentment among the other players.
Manchester City is not a happy camp - that much is certain. Mark Hughes is in danger because the team does not seem to be giving their heart and soul to win for him. If a manager loses the dressing room, he can be finished pretty quickly.

The transfer window can help City and Hughes. We have already seen the arrival of £11 million defender Wayne Bridge and more players will follow. But Hughes has warned that he needs about five new players - and it could take a year or more to get them. Does Hughes have that much time? Probably not. He needs to demontrate to City's mega-rich Arab owners that he can work well with what he already has too. Otherwise City could be relegated before all the new players gel to form a great team. The owners will not risk that. So Hughes is walking a tighrope with his Brazilians in midwinter!

Someone who is definitely not walking a tightrope is Roy Hodgson at Fulham. A few weeks ago I tipped Fulham for relegation and claimed that star striker Andy Johnson had lost the fire in his belly. Just to prove that I don't get it right all the time, Fulham have hardly lost a game since, and Johnson has found the net on a regular basis! My apologies to Fulham and I am particularly pleased for Hodgson that he has turned it round. He is a good man, something I realised when he used to manage Inter Milan and I was in Italy regularly to interview him.

Will Chelsea and City show a dramatic improvement before the weather here warms up? I have my doubts but one thing is for sure. This is an intriguing Premier League season! New Year greetings to everyone in Korea.
