▣ "Six in the third line : The one-eyed person attempts to see,
and the lame person attempts to walk.
Treading on the tiger's tail causes it to bite, bringing misfortune.
A mere warrior attempts to act like a great ruler."
[Explanation]
[Line 3] means that a one-eyed person tries to see and a lame person tries to walk.
Stepping on a tiger's tail causes it to bite a person, bringing misfortune;
a simple warrior attempts to become a great ruler.
[Commentary]
The commentary of Confucius following the line statements (Yaozi)
of the Duke and Zhou is detailed.
"A one-eyed person trying to see well means that their vision lacks the clarity of someone
with two eyes."[象曰 眇能視 不足以有明也,상왈 묘능시 부족이유명야 - 'Miao Neng Shi' implies
an inability to see clearly].
"A lame person trying to run well means that they cannot run as well as someone
with two healthy legs."[跛能履 不足以與行也,파능리 부족이여행야 - 'Po Neng Li' implies
an inability to walk or run properly].
"A person being bitten by a tiger causing misfortune indicates the their position is inapproprite."
Misfortune from being bitten happens because
the position is unsuitable].
"A warrior becoming a great ruler is due to having an overly strong/rigid determination."
A warrior becoming a ruler' stems form reckless
determination].
A one-eyed person and a lame person went around boasting as if they had
to healthy eyes and legs.
Failing to acknowledge their own shortcomings and acting recklessly will inevitably
on a tiger's tail, getting bitten, and dying.
Evena warrior(Wu-shi) can avoid the danger of the tiger once their eyes become clear
and their legs become sound.
That would be the time when they truly become a generous and capable ruler.
"Lacking the vision to properly see the world, it like a one-eyed person claiming
to see clearly [眇能視,묘능시] ; having a clumsy philosophy for navigating life,
it is like a lame person trying to run hastily
This reflects the lowly state of a person whose eagerness outpaces their ability
and whose stubbornness exceeds their wisdom.
How could such a person possibly maintain their original purity?
In times like this, one must be especially careful not to get caught in a tiger's mouth
or step on the danger that is a tiger's tail.
Since Line 3 is thoroughly lacking and unworthy(improper, unaligned,dark/sinister,
and the sole Yin line), if it steps on the tiger's tail
the result will inevitably be getting bitten and torn apart by the tiger [咥人,질인],
leading to misfortune.
There were even those who, recognizing their incompetence in terms of Miao Neng Shi
(眇能視,묘능시) and Po Neng Li (跛能履,파능리), submitted their resignations.
Furthermore, those thugs or ruffians who run wild relying only on fists and blades
should reform (개과천선).
Rather than remaining petty people who attack others, they are urged to keep silent,
uphold the weight of the martial path, act with strong resolve like a great ruler
[武人爲于大君 志剛也, 무인위우대군 지강야], and maintain trust and integrity.
Here, in Line 3, Zhishan(芝山,지산) Cho Ho-ik(曺好益,조호익) interpreted Munmu(文武,문무 -
civil and martial) and Salsaeng(殺生,살생 - killing/giving life) through Yin and Yang(陰陽,음양).
Xinghu(星湖,성호) neted that while seeing came first and treading followed,
both went too far, which is why the person was bitten by the tiger.
Huadong(華東,화동) Seo Yu-sin(徐有臣,서유신) added traditional percedents(설괘),
while Ganam(可庵,가암) Kim Gwi-ju(金龜周,김귀주) explained that although they seem
to see and walk, in reality, they cannot truly see or walk.
The explanation by Yangchon(陽村,양촌) is even more detailed.
Meanwhile, Line 3―improper, unaligned, and dark―presumes that as the sole Yin line,
it can manipulate all the Yang forces around it as a lure; however, the world neither
recognizes it nor consuders it a great figure.
Thus, its conduct appeared as reckless as trying to beat a wild beast with bare fists
or crossing a river barefoot without any preparation.
Nevertheless, because Line 3 is the only line that corresponds with the topmost line(Line 9),
if it receives the guidance of the virtuous top line,
it can become a great ruler whom everyone looks up to.
Historical allusions associated with Line 3 include KIng Li of Zhou [
and Confucius's disciple Zilu(子路,자로), who met atragic end and was pickled in salt.
