I have been to KimSatgat-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do more than ten times in the past to meet KimSatgat

But last spring, I was lucky enough to meet KimSatgat at a healthy ssambap restaurant across from Okdong Middle School in KimSatgat-myeon.

KimSatgat and I were just about to have dinner, so we ordered some Eosuri stone-pot-rice and sat across from each other to eat and drank makgeolli on the side.

That day, I asked KimSatgat why he doesn't write poetry these days.

I've been to the KimSatgat Literature Museum several times, but there were only poems written by Kim Satgat in the past and not a single poem written recently.

KimSatgat then asked me if I hadn't seen him while walking around KimSatgat-myeon.

Well, I'm so busy doing this and that that I can't write poetry these days

He said that he couldn't write poetry.

Poetry is the product of wandering, but since he couldn't wander, he said that he couldn't write poetry at all.

Whether it was because of the makgeolli, or because of the shame of not being able to write poetry at all, KimSatgat's face was flushed when we parted.

김삿갓을 한 번 만나보려고

강원도 영월군 김삿갓면을

그동안 열 번도 더 다녀왔네

그런데 지난봄 김삿갓면 소재지

옥동중학교 건너편 건강쌈밥집에서

김삿갓을 운 좋게도 한 번 만나볼 수 있었네

김삿갓과 나는 마침 저녁을 먹으려던 참이어서

어수리돌솥밥을 시켜

겸상으로 마주 앉아 먹으며

막걸리도 곁들여 마셨네

나는 그날 김삿갓에게

요즘은 왜 시를 쓰지 않느냐고 물어보았네

김삿갓 문학관에도 여러 차례 가보았지만

거기에는 예전에 김삿갓이 쓴 시만 있고

요즘 쓴 시는 한 편도 없더라고 했네

그랬더니 김삿갓은 나더러

김삿갓면을 돌아다니면서 보지 못했느냐고

김삿갓 포도농장 김삿갓 송어 양식장 김삿갓 주막

김삿갓 펜션 김삿갓 부동산

이 일 저 일 오만 일을 하느라 너무 바쁜 탓에

요즘은 도무지 시를 쓸 수 없다고

시는 방랑의 소산인데

방랑을 할 수 없으니

시를 통 쓸 수 없다고 했네

막걸리 기운이 올라서인지

시를 통 못 쓰고 있다는 부끄러움 때문인지

김삿갓은 헤어질 때쯤엔 얼굴이 불콰했네

One of the most famous amateur poets from the yangban (noble) class in the late Joseon Dynasty, Kim Byeong-yeon (金炳淵), was born in the 7th year of King Sunjo’s reign and lived until the 14th year of King Cheoljong’s reign.

His pen name was Jisang, but he is more widely known as Kim Satgat, a nickname derived from his life of wandering while wearing a traditional Korean hat (satgat).

In fact, he was a member of the powerful political family of late Joseon known as the Shin Andong Kim clan and the Noron Jangdong Kim clan.

Although figures such as Kim Jo-sun, Kim Ik-sun (and Kim Dal-sun of the Byeokpa faction) shared the same generational rank (hangnyeol), they were distant relatives, being 18th cousins, and thus not closely related by blood.

Notably, within the Jangdong Kim clan, Kim Ik-sun’s branch was primarily a military family. Kim Byeong-yeon belonged to the Hyuamgong branch (Hyuamgong-pa) of the Jangdong Kim clan. The founder of this branch, Kim Sang-jun (Hyuamgong), was a cousin of Kim Sang-heon, the progenitor of the core Munjeonggong branch (Munjeonggong-pa) of the Jangdong Kim clan.
