“돈, 찬사, 명성에 대한 관심을 잃으면,

그 즉시 당신은 성공의 절정에 이르게 된다.”라는 지혜로운 내용이 있습니다.

"You have reached the pinnacle of success

as soon as you become uninterested in money, compliments,

or publicity."

우리가 행한 것들로 찬사나 상을 받게 될 때,

불행하게도 정반대의 경우가 종종 일어납니다.

Unfortunately, just the opposite often happens

when something we have done is praised and rewarded.

겸손했던 마음이 순식간에 자만으로 돌변하곤 합니다.

 A humble heart can quickly become a swelled head.

사울이 왕으로 기름부음 받기 바로 전에는,

Just before Saul was anointed king,

he saw himself as a member of an insignificant family

in the smallest tribe of Israel.

Within a few years, however,

he had erected a monument in his own honor and

had become the supreme authority for his conduct.

사무엘 선지자는 사울에게

여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으셨나이다”(17절)라고 상기시키며,

하나님께 불순종한 사울에 맞섰습니다.

The prophet Samuel confronted Saul

for his disobedience to God by reminding him,

 "When you were little in your own eyes,

were you not head of the tribes of Israel?

 And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?".

스스로 거만해지는 것은

우리가 성공이라 부르는 것으로부터 미끄러운 내리막길로 치닫는 첫걸음입니다.

Self-importance is the first step down the slippery slope

of what we call success.

그것은 하나님이 주신 승리를 우리의 공로로 주장하고,

주님의 명령을 우리들의 욕망에 맞게 수정할 때 시작됩니다.

It begins when we claim credit for God-given victories

and modify His commands to suit our desires.

진정한 성공이란 우리가 갈망하는 것을 얻는 것이 아니라,

주님의 말씀을 좇고 주님을 찬양하며 하나님의 길 안에 머무는 것입니다.

True success is staying on God's path by following His Word

and giving Him praise instead of craving it for ourselves. -David McCasland

1 Samuel 사무엘상 15:10-23  

[삼상] 15:10	여호와의 말씀이 사무엘에게 임하니라 이르시되 Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel:
[삼상] 15:11	내가 사울을 왕으로 세운 것을 후회하노니 그가 돌이켜서 나를 따르지 아니하며 내 명령을 행하지 아니하였음이니라 하신지라 사무엘이 근심하여 온 밤을 여호와께 부르짖으니라 "I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions." Samuel was troubled, and he cried out to the LORD all that night.
[삼상] 15:12	사무엘이 사울을 만나려고 아침에 일찍이 일어났더니 어떤 사람이 사무엘에게 말하여 이르되 사울이 갈멜에 이르러 자기를 위하여 기념비를 세우고 발길을 돌려 길갈로 내려갔다 하는지라 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, "Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal."
[삼상] 15:13	사무엘이 사울에게 이른즉 사울이 그에게 이르되 원하건대 당신은 여호와께 복을 받으소서 내가 여호와의 명령을 행하였나이다 하니 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD'S instructions."
[삼상] 15:14	사무엘이 이르되 그러면 내 귀에 들려오는 이 양의 소리와 내게 들리는 소의 소리는 어찌 됨이니이까 하니라 But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?"
[삼상] 15:15	사울이 이르되 그것은 무리가 아말렉 사람에게서 끌어 온 것인데 백성이 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려 하여 양들과 소들 중에서 가장 좋은 것을 남김이요 그 외의 것은 우리가 진멸하였나이다 하는지라 Saul answered, "The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but we totally destroyed the rest."
[삼상] 15:16	사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 가만히 계시옵소서 간 밤에 여호와께서 내게 이르신 것을 왕에게 말하리이다 하니 그가 이르되 말씀하소서 "Stop!" Samuel said to Saul. "Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night." "Tell me," Saul replied.
[삼상] 15:17	사무엘이 이르되 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고 Samuel said,  "Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel?  The LORD anointed you king over Israel.
[삼상] 15:18	또 여호와께서 왕을 길로 보내시며 이르시기를 가서 죄인 아말렉 사람을 진멸하되 다 없어지기까지 치라 하셨거늘 And he sent you on a mission, saying, 'Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.'
[삼상] 15:19	어찌하여 왕이 여호와의 목소리를 청종하지 아니하고 탈취하기에만 급하여 여호와께서 악하게 여기시는 일을 행하였나이까 Why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD?"
[삼상] 15:20	사울이 사무엘에게 이르되 나는 실로 여호와의 목소리를 청종하여 여호와께서 보내신 길로 가서 아말렉 왕 아각을 끌어 왔고 아말렉 사람들을 진멸하였으나 "But I did obey the LORD," Saul said. "I went on the mission the LORD assigned me.  I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.
[삼상] 15:21	다만 백성이 그 마땅히 멸할 것 중에서 가장 좋은 것으로 길갈에서 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려고 양과 소를 끌어 왔나이다 하는지라 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal."
[삼상] 15:22	사무엘이 이르되 여호와께서 번제와 다른 제사를 그의 목소리를 청종하는 것을 좋아하심 같이 좋아하시겠나이까 순종이 제사보다 낫고 듣는 것이 숫양의 기름보다 나으니 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices  as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
[삼상] 15:23	이는 거역하는 것은 점치는 죄와 같고 완고한 것은 사신 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같음이라 왕이 여호와의 말씀을 버렸으므로 여호와께서도 왕을 버려 왕이 되지 못하게 하셨나이다 하니 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."

Help me, O Lord, lest my heart become proud, For all of my talents by You are endowed; Nothing I have can I claim as my own- What mercy and grace in my life You have shown! True humility credits God for every success.

오 주여, 나의 모든 재능은 당신이 주신 것이니 내 마음이 교만하지 않도록 나를 도와주소서 내 인생에서 얼마나 큰 자비와 은총을 주님이 보여주셨는지요! 내게 있는 어떤 것도 내 것이라고 우길 수 없습니다 모든 성공을 하나님의 공로로 여기는 것이 진정한 겸손이다.
