When I look at people who disparage others...
(putting myself in their shoes)
In the world we live in, there are many people who readily criticize or condemn others;
If only they would put themselves in the other person's shoes—realizing that
when you don't know someone well, it is best to simply focus on their good qualities...
Yet strangely, what is the psychology behind people who invariably single out and
focus on the other person's flaws and shortcomings first?
Deep within the psyche of such a person, unhealed wounds and personal flaws lie buried.
There is a saying that for every one fault of another, one has ten of one's own.
Those who turn around to dwell on the shortcomings of others
and speak ill of them only soil their own lips. It seems that wherever people live,
there are always those who disparage others.
Consider the Native American proverb: "Do not criticize a person until you have walked
a mile in their shoes." This sentiment applies far beyond just Native American villages—it holds true for our own lives as well. No matter how similar a situation might seem,
a person's personality, the environment in which they lived, and their inner state of mind
are things that can never be exactly the same as one's own.
If those who harshly condemn others were to put themselves in the other person's shoes—recognizing that, much like a dog covered in dung criticizing one with mere chaff on its coat,
there are far more shameful flaws in this world that ought to be covered up rather than exposed—they would likely feel an urge to be understanding and supportive instead. It is disheartening to see
the current state of affairs, where people disregard the natural order of things: they conceal
their own shortcomings while obsessively digging up and criticizing the faults of others.
The faults and criticisms of others that spill from one's own lips are, in truth,
reflections of one's own flaws and judgments... Words have a way of coming full circle.
Offer praise when the person is absent, and encouragement when they are present...
How beautiful that is—for the praise and encouragement we give ultimately find their way back to us.
