A Debt (Kindness) That Can Never Be Fully Repaid
A long time ago, in the city of Boston, USA, there lived a young man named Strossa.
He had big dreams, but lacking the money needed to realize them,
he approached a wealthy man named Mr. Barton and asked to borrow 2,000 dollars.
He stated with confidence that, although he had no collateral to offer,
he possessed both a vision for his work and the courage to pursue it;
he promised that if they would trust him and grant the loan,
he would never forget their kindness. Those around Mr. Barton tried to dissuade him,
warning that it was a risky endeavor to lend money to someone with no
prior experience—especially without any collateral or a guarantor.
However, Mr. Barton, impressed by the young man’s courage, decided to take a risk
and gave him $2,000. As it turned out, Strosa paid back the money before long.
Ten years passed after this event. At that time, the United States was struck by
the Great Depression, and Mr. Barton found himself on the verge of total bankruptcy.
Upon learning of this through rumors, Strosa approached Mr. Barton and said,
"I will pay off the $75,000 debt you owe." Surprised, Mr. Barton asked,
"What do you mean? I’ve already paid back the money you took—
what are you talking about?" Strosa’s response was truly remarkable.
"While I certainly paid back the $2,000 I owed you long ago, the kindness
you showed me is something I can never repay in my entire lifetime.
With that $2,000, I was able to start a business, which led me to become
the wealthy person I am today. Anyone who thinks such a debt can be settled
with money must be out of their mind. Acts of kindness and
love are debts that can never be fully repaid."
