프랑스 Naval Grouo이 설계한 잠수함 전용으로 설계됐다고 합니다. 최근 스콜펜급을 도입한 나라들이 판촉 대상이겠네요. 

홍보용 영상에 미사일에 맞는 표적함 CG가 중국 해군 055급이랑 비슷하네요. 파키스탄 해군도 판촉 대상일 텐데 ㅎㅎㅎ

PARIS — European defense contractor MBDA has developed a new submarine-launched missile designed to strike heavily protected naval vessels and stealthy targets.

The French-built missile, dubbed the SM40, is the latest variant of the Exocet family. The main elements that differentiate it from its predecessor, the SM39, is the integration of a new J-Band radio-frequency seeker, new algorithms tailored for high-intensity environments, and twice the reach, company officials told Defense News.

“It features a doubled range in the class of 120km with a new turbojet engine, to regain the stand-off distance in anti-submarine warfare,” Pierre-Marie Bealleau, head of business development for deep strike missiles at MBDA, said.

Belleau added that the SM40 was designed solely to equip Naval Group-made submarines, which indicates that the two systems will share the same customer range established by the French shipbuilder globally.

The SM39 is in service with several navies across the world, including France and India.

While the new submarine-launched variant is tailored to defeat highly protected combat vessels and stealth targets, Belleau noted that it also features a land attack capability, “to defeat ship at harbor, for instance.”

Similarly to its predecessor, the SM40 also uses the same launch method: a propelled and guided underwater vehicle. The missile is housed in the vehicle and is ejected once it breaks the water surface at a low altitude.

The SM40 is not yet in production, but according to the MBDA representative, given that it is based on existing and mature technological blocks, the time needed to put it on the market should be considerably reduced.

At the Euronaval show here, organized here from November 4-7, MBDA is showcasing an Exocet MM40 B3C in order to mark the 4,000th Exocet missile produced, per a company press release.

Pan-European missile manufacturer MBDA has unveiled plans for a new submarine-launched variant of its Exocet anti-ship missile.

In a promotional video, the Exocet SM40 is seen targeting a Type 055 destroyer—known as the Renhai-class cruiser in NATO terminology—a stealth guided-missile destroyer from China’s naval fleet.

“EXOCET SM40 is our latest generation submarine-launched anti-ship system, and part of one of our most advanced maritime missile families,” the video text states.

The Exocet SM40 builds upon the capabilities of its predecessor, the Exocet SM39, with two major enhancements designed to address the evolving challenges of modern naval warfare. These include the integration of advanced technologies from the Exocet MM40 B3c, such as a coherent J-band RF seeker and updated missile algorithms, enhancing the missile’s ability to operate in high-intensity electronic warfare environments.

These advancements enable the Exocet SM40 to accurately discriminate and identify targets, even in complex electronic conditions, while retaining the operational flexibility to launch from extreme depths or brown water. This capability is crucial as advancements in surface ship detection have increased the threat to submarines, requiring a more sophisticated anti-ship response.

MBDA’s new missile reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining its position as Europe’s premier provider of advanced naval strike capabilities. “With this new missile, MBDA builds on its expertise to remain the sole European player to provide a unique sovereign capability for submarines, with no equivalent on the market,” the company stated.

The promo video’s inclusion of a Chinese Type 055 destroyer underscores the missile’s potential role in countering emerging naval threats.
