▣ "Nine in the fourth line : TReading on the tiger's tail,
one is filled with extreme caution and fear(Suseu/Su-su),
but in the end, it brings good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Line Nine-Four(九四,구사)] means stepping on a tiger's tail.
Although it is terrifying and perilous, maintained caution leads ultimately
to good fortune(as one manages to handle the tiger safely).
[Commentary]
The Lushi Chunqiu(여씨춘추, Annals of Lu Buwei) is a work of the Miscellaneous School
(雜家,잡가), but Confucian doctrine appears in one particular passage as follows :
After defeating the Shang(Yin) Dynasty, King We of Zhou capturd two prisoners
of war and asked, 'Were there any strange or ominous portents in your country?"
One prisoner replied, "Yes, stars were visible during the day, and blood rained from the sky."
However, the other prisoner said, 'Such phenomena are not truly major portents.
The greatest portents in our country were that children did not listen to their fathers,
younger brothers did not obey their elder brothers,
and the ruler's commands were not carried out."
Upon hearing this, King Wu adjusted his posture and bowed twice in deep respect.
This was not out of respect for the prisoner personally,
but out of deep respect for the wisdom of his words.
Thus, does not the I Ching say, "Even when treading on a tiger's tail,
if one remains extremely cautious and prudent without losing carefulness,
it will ultimately bring good fortune"?
"In the chapter 'Bal-mong(發蒙,발몽)' of Shizi(尸子,시자), this explantion is further elaborated :"
"It was said, 'Treading on the tiger's tail with extreme caution and fear leads ultimately
to good fortune (履虎尾 愬愬終吉,이호미 색색종길).
If all subjects and ministers were to exercise such care and vigilance,
as if treading on a tiger's tail, what task could they not resolve?"
In the Hexagram Lu (履卦,이괘), the dangerous figure is the tiger whose tail was
stepped on in Line 3.
