- Could it be the power of reading? Contrary to what I expected, many of our members said they found it difficult to relate to the author’s state of mind, which made me think that perhaps our members are pretty emotionally strong. And since so many people chose tteokbokki as their soul food, I’m even more convinced that the title did half the work in making this book so popular.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Written by South Korean author Baek Sehee, this memoir chronicles her decade-long experience with dysthymia (persistent mild depression) through a series of transcribed conversations with her psychiatrist. Its title captures the book's central tension — the ability to carry on with life's small pleasures, like a favorite comfort food, even while struggling with the desire to disappear. Since its 2018 publication, the book has become a national bestseller in South Korea, sold more than a million copies worldwide, and been translated into 25 languages, including an English edition published in 2022.

09. If you had a friend like Sehee, what kind of friend do you think you would be to her?
10. This book became a huge bestseller in Korea, especially among young readers, and even led to a sequel. Why do you think it resonated so widely? What does that say about this generation, or this moment?
08. What's your favorite type of tteokbokki — or more broadly, what's your personal "soul food," the dish that comforts you the way tteokbokki does for Baek?
