Ephesians 1:17–20

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know Him. I pray that He may enlighten the eyes of your heart so that you may know the hope of His calling, the abundant glory of His inheritance among the saints, and the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe—a power at work according to His mighty strength.

Those who confess Jesus as their Savior and believe in Him have something they must continually pray for: to be filled more fully with the Holy Spirit and to understand spiritual realities.

The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of the hearts of those who once lived seeking only the things of this world. He enables them to look toward eternal life and heaven and gives them the hope of entering heaven.

The inheritance that believers have received here on earth belongs to eternal heaven, rather than to this world. Therefore, believers must live a life that leads them into heaven.

The desires of our fallen flesh and Satan hinder us from entering heaven. Yet the Holy Spirit, who is stronger than all these, continually guards us and leads us forward.

When those who believe in Jesus repent, obey the Lord’s Word, and pray, the Holy Spirit guides them. Christians who confess Jesus as Lord once and then live immersed in the world do not receive the Holy Spirit’s protection and guidance.

Christians who follow human doctrines instead of the Lord’s Word are under Satan’s dominion. They do not recognize that the Lord is alive, and if they continue living that way until they die, they will go to hell.

Many people came to believe in Jesus in the various regions where the apostle Paul preached the gospel. Paul continually prayed that they would not fall back into the ways of the world.

He prayed that they would always be filled with the Holy Spirit and live according to the words of Jesus. In other words, he pleaded with God that they would remain faithful to a life of repentance and obedience, never forgetting spiritual mysteries or the hope of heaven.
