This course assists writers to develop and extend their writing skills. It is a practical course, placing emphasis on the production of a folio of completed and publishable work, which could lead to a wide variety of career opportunities. Core units include editing and computer skills for writers and editors. You will also receive an overview of the industry and have the opportunity to undertake electives such as short story writing, non-fiction writing, writing for children or young adults, poetry, screenwriting and novel writing.
A practical work placement also allows you to gain insight into the industry while picking up some valuable practical skills.
This course is also available to International Students.
To complete Certificate IV, you must obtain 10 points (see note): the four core units, at least two points from Stage 1 electives, plus four points from Stage I electives or electives 1/2.
To complete the Diploma, you must meet the requirements of Certificate IV, then obtain eight additional points: at least four points from Stage 2 electives, plus four points from electives 1/2. (These points must be in addition to the ones completed for Certificate IV).
Note: one point equals four hours study a week over a 17 week semester. All units are worth one point with the exception of Small Press Publishing, which is worth two points. Please note that many units follow sequentially from Semester 1 to 2 for example, Novel 1A and Novel 1B.
The structure of this course may change. Further details may be obtained by contacting the Centre for Vocational Access & Education and by visiting the website at www.bhtafe.edu.au
