The Lotus Sutra 妙法蓮華經 方便品 34-35

[석원/觀性]

<제이청법(第二請法)>

34.舍利弗이 重白佛言하사대 世尊하 惟願說之하시며 惟願說之하소서 所以者何오 是會無數百千萬億阿僧祗衆生이 曾見諸佛하야 諸根猛利하며 智慧明了하야 聞佛所說하면 則能敬信하리다

사리불이 다시 부처님께 사뢰었습니다.

“세존이시여, 원컨대 말씀하여주십시오. 원컨대 말씀하여주십시오. 왜냐하면 이 회상(會上)에 있는 무수한 백 천 만 억 아승지 중생들은 일찍이 여러 부처님을 친견하여 모든 근(根)이 영리하며 지혜가 명철하여 부처님의 말씀을 들으면 능히 공경하고 믿을 것입니다.”

Shariputra :사리불  once more spoke to :다시 사뢰었습니다. World-Honored One:세존이시여,

beg v.간청하다. preach v.연설하다 this assembly:이 회상(會上) countless :무수한

hundreds, thousands, ten thousands millions :백 천 만 억  asamkhyas of living beings:아승지 중생들

their faculties are vigorous and acute :모든 근(根)이 영리하며 their wisdom is bright:지혜가 명철하여

be capable of ~능히 할 수 있는 reverent belief.:공경하고 믿을 것

Shariputra once more spoke to the Buddha, saying, "World-Honored One, we beg you to preach! We beg you to preach! What is the reason? Because this assembly of countless hundreds, thousands, ten thousands millions of asamkhyas of living beings in the past have seen the Buddhas; their faculties are vigorous and acute and their wisdom is bright. If they hear the Buddha preach, they will be capable of reverent belief." <Burton Watson 번역>

Shariputra again addressed the Buddha saying, "World Honored One, I only pray that you will speak it. I only pray that you will speak it. What is the reason? In this assembly are countless hundreds of thousands of myriads of millions of Asankhyeyas of living beings who have, in the past, seen the Buddhas. Their roots are keen and their wisdom bright. Hearing what the Buddha says they will be able to revere and believe it." <B.T.T.S>

35.爾時舍利弗이 欲重宣此義하사 而說偈言하니라

法王無上尊이시여惟說願勿慮하소서

是會無量衆이有能敬信者리다

이때 사리불이 이 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 게송을 말하였습니다.

최상의 법왕(法王)이신 세존이시여, 원컨대 말씀하여 주시고 염려 마십시오.

여기 모인 한량없는 여러 대중들은 능히 공경하고 믿을 사람들입니다.

wishing to state his meaning once more:이 뜻을 거듭 펴려고 spoke in verse form, saying: 게송을 말하였습니다

Dharma King: 법왕(法王),  none more highly honored:최상의, reserve v.유보하다. numberless beings:한량없는 여러 대중들

At that time Shariputra, wishing to state his meaning once more, spoke in verse form, saying:

Dharma King, none more highly honored,

speak, we beg you, without reserve!

In this assembly of numberless beings

are those capable of reverent belief. <Burton Watson 번역>

At that time, Shariputra, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke the following verses:

Dharma King, Supremely Honored One,

Do but speak; pray have no worries,

For, within the limitless multitudes,
