This is good data, Mr. Yun. So...just TWO things to do in order to turn it into a good analysis for next week.
a) We have to change the transcription. Remember that punctuation marks don't mean exactly the same thing in CA that they mean in "normal" transcription. For example:
1. CA doesn't use CAPITALS except to indicate loudness.
2. CA doesn't use "?" except to indicate UP intonation. That means that most wh-questions end with "."
b) We have to take the data in smaller bites: in particular, we have to focus on each turn as a SOCIAL ACTION and the first pair part of an ADJACENCY PAIR.
Like this:
T: you're right. SEED and then. (Intonation? Up or down?)
last step is (1.0) 씨앗을 심으면 어떻게 되나요? (A whole second? Really?)
Ss: 자라요. 자랐어요
That is our first adjacency pair. Notice that the T turn has two distinct parts. One of them is a kind of "reaction" shot--the teacher expresses his or her response to the previous (untranscribed) response. The other is a "re-entry" move: the T asks a very open question.
Now, the response is also two parts. But they are not FUNCTIONALLY different. They are only STRUCTURALLY different. Why?
Remember that Seedhouse tells us there is always a kind of TENSION between pedagogy and interaction. We teach English. That's pedagogy. But we also teach IN English, teach THROUGH English. That's interaction.
An obvious example of this tension, this CONTRADICTION, is the way the teacher handles repair. On the one hand, we are teaching English. That means there is a STRONG emphasis on other-initiated other repair and not simply waiting for self-initiated self-repair. On the other, we are teaching interaction. That means that there is a STRONG emphasis on self-initiated self-repair and not other-initiated other repair.
T: 자랐죠? oak tree에서 SPROUTING이라는 낱말 생각나요? (ALL of this stressed? Not just 는?)
Ss: 네 (NO intonation?)
T: sprouting 뜻이 뭐였어요?
Ss: 새싹, 새싹이요
T: last step is WHAT? (No DOWN intonation?)
Ss: sprouting
T: let's check the life cycle of pine tree (No stress or intonation?)
what's the first step? (No DOWN intonation?)
Ss: CONE
T: NEXT
Ss: POLLEN
T: NEXT
Ss: SEED
T: LAST
Ss: SPROUTING (Wow--a lot of shouting going on!)
T: this is a life cycle of WHAT? (Up or down?)
Ss: PINE TREE
