10. Tian Ze Lu (Heaven over Lake / Hexagram 10 :Treading). Lu......7.
▣ "Nine in the fifth line : Resolutely treading forward―even with upright governance,
danger persists."
[Explanation]
[Line Nine-Five(九五,구오)] means treading or acting resolutely with joy.
However, no matter how correctly or uprightly one governs, danger always follows.
[Commentary]
One must resolve not to be tempted by Line 3, who is the root of evil(the Achilles' heel).
Even if one moves forward bravely and with a joyful heart on their own,
danger still accompanies them, making this a position that demands extreme prudence.
Whether, it is the original Heaven-over-Lake(天澤履卦,천택이괘 -Tian Ze Lu)
or Lake-over-Heaven (澤天夬卦,택천쾌괘 - Ze Tian Guai),
temptation from petty individuals lurks all around, above and below, left and right.
The close ministers supproting Line 5 are rigid and lack flexibility;
moreover, even the ruler's spouse, Line 2, is a strong counterpart.
Thus, no matter how excellent a decision is made, concerns for the future remain.
Even when Line 5 moves according to the fortune of the times,
it becomes Fire-over-Lake(火澤睽,화택규 - Huo Ze Kui).
Hence, a noble position is always accompanied by hardship.
Cheng Yi (정자) ststed : "Although a sage possesses the ability to illuminate the entire world,
if they fail to achieve full communication with all under heaven, listening even to insignificant
voices allows them to remain a sage and shine brightly in the position of the ruler."
Therefore, in any world, there can never be a ally that is 100% on one's side.
For this reason, Line 3 acts as an anti-group, like the mouth of a tiger [虎口,호구] making
opposition noise that constantly holds the ruler back.
Thus, the ruler must always govern the country with clear insight and wisdom.
Therefore, even if the ruler believes an action is strictly beneficial to the nation and its people,
making decisive and forceful moves [夬履,쾌이], this position [貞厲,정려] will inevitably carry
worries and peril no matter how uprightly governance is conducted.
One must never forget the potential dangers when making decisions.
"In historical tradition, when Emperor Yao abdicated to Emperor Shun,
he urged him to devotion, sating :'Sincerity and commitment must be held fast
in the Golden Mean' [允執闕中,윤집궐중]."
"When Emperor Shun absicated to Emperor Yu,
he also advised that the human mind is full of peril
but the mind of the Dao is subtle and refined
"He advised him to focus with undivided devotion and sincerity [惟精惟一,유정유일],
uniting the will of Heaven and the people into one,
and holdinng firmly to the mean without leaning to any side
Furthermore, King Mu of Zhou recounted the story that even the most powerful ruler must
hold worry and fear in their heart as if treading on a tiger's tail.
Confucius warned Duke Ai :
"To hold the supreme power of a nation and stand above all people is like driving a wild harse
with rotten reins; it requires utmost caution and fear.
Is it not as perilous as treading on thin ice,
just as the metaphor of 'treading on a tiger's tail' in the Book of Changes(I Ching) suggests?"
All of these warnings express deep concern regarding the state of "夬履貞厲(쾌리정려 - Resolute
Treading with Perilous Governance)."
Seeing Confucius state, "Resolutely treading forward―even with upright governance,
with peril is because the position is correct and proper],"
it implies that the throne is inherently accompanied by such trial and responsibility.
Because a ruler is constantly surrounded by difficult situations and is called upon to make lonely,
resolute decisions [夬履,쾌리], this burden is a unique fate that only a ruler can bear.
Therefore, few in history have ever truly listened to all the opinions of the world.
Emperor Shunzhi(順治皇帝,순치황제), who cast off his imperial robes, donned a monastic Kasaya,
and fled, once said :
"A person who committed the most foolish deeds in a past life must take on the uncomfortable
position of an emperor to live out their life in atonement."
