The morality of state power is indefinite | |
![]() |
Since our past has never been properly reconciled, conflicts that were supposed to have been overcome were never overcome. Some people say this sounds like retaliation, but how is retaliation possible? Who would you retaliate against for what happened in the past? The colonial Japanophiles have passed away a while ago. They have long been granted the extinctive prescription of prosecution, and the power they possess prevents any possibility of retaliation. We need to clarify the past. How else can life go on? All nations should clarify the past. I bring up issues from the past because I know its victims. Those who were wounded by state power should be treated by it. The morality of state power should be indefinite. There cannot be a limit to punishing the wrongdoings of the state. People who were hurt should be healed and people who were dishonored should regain their respect. There is no end to the state morality. One way to double check the past is to redefine it. Crimes committed by the abuse of state power should never be overlooked. The system should be improved if need be to guarantee that such incidents will never be repeated again. This will leave a strong mark in history, and it is one of the reasons why we need to clarify the past. < KBS, the President speaks, Aug. 25, 2005 > |
