Nat'l Assembly passes bill on new serious crime investigation agency

SEOUL, March 21 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly on Saturday passed a prosecution reform bill led by the ruling Democratic Party (DP), laying the legal groundwork for a new serious crime investigation agency to be launched in October.
서울, 3월 21일 (연합뉴스) -- 국회는 토요일 여당인 민주당(DP)이 주도하는 검찰 개혁 법안을 통과시켜 10월에 새로운 중대 범죄 수사 기관이 출범할 법적 기반을 마련했습니다.

The bill was approved in a 166-1 vote during a plenary session shortly after a 24-hour filibuster by the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) ended. PPP lawmakers boycotted the vote.
이 법안은 제1야당인 국민의힘(PPP)의 24시간 필리버스터가 끝난 직후 본회의에서 166대 1의 표결로 승인되었습니다. 국민의 힘(PPP) 의원들은 투표를 보이콧했습니다.

Under the bill, the new investigative body will be established under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and will be responsible for probing major crimes, including corruption, economic offenses, defense industry-related crimes, drug offenses, insurrection and cyber crimes.
이 법안에 따르면, 새로운 조사 기구는 행정안전부 산하에 설립될 예정이며 부패, 경제 범죄, 방위 산업 관련 범죄, 마약 범죄, 반란 및 사이버 범죄를 포함한 주요 범죄를 조사하는 책임을 맡게 됩니다.

The latest move came a day after the DP railroaded another bill aimed at stripping the prosecution of investigative authority and laying the legal groundwork for a new indictment agency.
이번 조치는 민주당(DP)이 수사 권한을 박탈하고 새로운 기소 기관의 법적 근거를 마련하기 위한 또 다른 법안을 강행 처리한 지 하루 만에 이루어졌습니다.

The two bills are set to take effect in October, when the current prosecution service structure will be abolished as part of the government's push to separate the powers of investigation and indictment.
두 법안은 수사권과 기소권을 분리하려는 정부의 노력의 일환으로 현행 검찰 서비스 구조가 폐지되는 10월에 시행될 예정입니다.

Under the new framework, the indictment agency will handle only indictments, while investigative powers will be transferred to the newly established serious crimes investigation agency.
새로운 프레임워크에 따르면 기소 기관은 기소만 처리하고 수사 권한은 신설된 중대 범죄 수사 기관으로 이관됩니다.
