  1. Verse of the Day

1)Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but 2)violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. —Proverbs 10:6

의로운 자의 머리는 축복의 왕관을 쓸 것이고 사악한 자의 입은 폭언이 남무하리라.  —잠언 10:6

  ▶ Words & Phrases

  1) Blessings crown the head of the righteous

   = Blessings are on the head of the righteous

   = Good people will receive blessings

   = The godly are showered with blessings

    - crown : 왕관[화관, 머리 장식]을 씌우다

    - the righteous : righteous people 의로운 사람들

    - the godly : godly people 경건한 사람들

    - be showered with ~ : ~가 가득 가득하다(충만하다), ~공세를 받다 

     * shower [ʃáuər] : [물건·은혜·비난 등을] [남에게] 퍼붓다, 쏟다[on ‥]; [남에게] […을] 아낌없이 주다[with ‥]

  2) violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked

   = the mouth of the wicked conceals violence

   = The words of the wicked hide a violent nature

   = the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions

    - overwhelm [òuvərhwélm] : 제압하다, 압도하다

    - the wicked : wicked people 사악한 사람들

    - conceal : hide 숨기다, 감추다

  2. Thoughts on Today's Verse

Jesus told Peter, "1)Those who live by the sword will die by the sword." Violence 2)begets violence and 3)rarely

does a violent person not have to taste the bitter repayment of violence. God's Wise Man is saying 4)essentially

the same thing in this verse, but with one key addition. Blessings come to the person who is righteous. 5)We reap

what we sow!

예수님께서 베드로에게 "칼로 일어선 자는 칼로 망한다" 라고 하셨습니다. 폭력은 폭력을 낳고, 쓰디쓴 폭력적 복수를 맛보지 않는 폭력배는 거의 없습니다. 하나님의 지혜자도 이 구절에서 본질적으로 같은 이야기를 하고 있지만 가장 중요한 한가지를 더 말하고 있습니다. 의로운 사람에게 축복이 임한다는 것이고, 뿌린 대로 거둘 것이라는 것입니다.

  1) Question: "What does it mean to live by the sword and die by the sword?"
Answer: The saying “live by the sword, die by the sword” is an idiom that basically means “what goes around

comes around.” More to the point, “if you use violent, forceful, or underhanded methods against other people, you can expect those same methods to be used against you.” The proverb “live by the sword, die by the sword” has a biblical origin. It comes from a conversation between Jesus and His disciple Peter just before Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. After Jesus was betrayed by Judas, a group of soldiers moved in to arrest the Lord. In a rash attempt to protect Jesus, Peter pulled out his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear—you can be sure Peter was trying to do more damage than that (John 18:10). Jesus rebuked Peter and put a quick stop to the bloodshed. Jesus replaced the wounded man’s ear, healing him instantly (Luke 22:51). Then He

told Peter to put his sword away, for “all who draw the sword will die by the sword” (Matthew 26:52). Jesus also

told Peter that He would not fight the arrest, for it was God’s will that He drink the cup that was given to Him (John 18:11). Jesus had come to die as a sacrifice for sin, and now was the time. Jesus’ placating of Peter also showed His concern for His disciple—in warning Peter against using violence, Jesus prevented Peter from being arrested

himself. “Live by the sword, die by the sword” has become a common expression‎, adapted from Jesus’ words to

Peter. The proverb’s meaning is still basically the same: a person who lives violently will probably at some point be killed in a violent manner. Violence begets violence. Those who practice violence will come to violent ends.

     (이 문장은 부정적인 의미를 갖는 부사 rarely를 문두에 둠으로 도치가 일어남)

     - rarely : 보통 문장 전체를 수식하여,  드물게; 좀처럼 …않다(seldom)

    = a violent person does not rarely have to taste the bitter repayment of violence

       쓰디쓴 폭력적 복수를 맛보지 않는 폭력배는 거의 없습니다.

       (폭력배가 쓰디쓴 복수를 당하는 것은 드물지 않습니다)

     - taste : 경험하다, 맛보다  

     - repayment : 앙갚음

  4) essentially the same thing : 본질적으로(근본적으로/기본적으로) 같은

  5) We reap what we sow!

     - reap [riːp] : 거둬들이다

     - sow [sou] : 뿌리다

Holy God, please bless me with righteousness — not just by your grace and mercy, but by the transformation of

my heart by your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name I ask it. Amen.
