Gemma Ward has all the usual teenage concerns. Her younger twin brothers drive her mad with their passion for basketball and she can't wait to be a bit older.

But she is heading rapidly into a world of very different concerns and already leads a life beyond most teenage girl's dreams.

In September the 16 year-old onetime waitress will be earning from $10,000 to $70,000 a show as she struts down the world's most glamorous catwalks being photographed for labels such as Prada and Yves Saint Laurent.

Flagged as Australia's next supermodel, she is about to grace the cover of US Vogue magazine.

September will be a huge month for the 178cm Perth beauty, with her striking wide-set eyes, porcelain skin and bee-stung lips.

As well as appearing on the cover of Vogue, she will complete 52 designer shows for the autumn/ winter season.

Vogue tried to keep the September cover a secret but talk is rife that Ward and nine other international modelling greats, including Gisele Bundchen, Karolina Kurkova and Carolyn Murphy, will feature under the headline The Return of the Supermodel.

Back in Perth for a much-needed break, the down-to-earth teenager took time out from a stroll along the river with her mother Claire yesterday and stopped for a chat at a Nedlands cafe. She confirmed she had shot for US Vogue in New York about a month ago.

"If it comes out in that way then I will have done everything that I have ever wanted to do. It will be something that I will always be very proud of and show my grandchildren," Ward said.

"When I did the shoot it was very secret. We weren't allowed to look at the pictures that were being made."

Ward is blazing a path around the world and will also feature on the September cover of Australian Vogue which was shot in Athens by renowned photographer Justin Smith. She will soon be on the cover of Japan's Vogue, has shot for W Magazine and British Vogue's September editions and is featured inside Paris Vogue as the next in line to the modelling throne.

She has already been on the covers of British and Italian Vogue and the elite W Magazine, which usually only uses celebrities.

And she also wants to attend NIDA acting school and will star in two Australian films to be shot next year. But she is serious about drama and does not want to use her modelling to launch an acting career.

In this stratospheric and high-paced atmosphere she has to constantly remind herself of her age.

She was discovered through Search for a Supermodel in 2002, spotted in the crowd while cheering on her friends.

Her rise to the top has been rapid, and though when she first started life was stressful, and leaving home to be on her own a lot was tough, she is now enjoying the tiring lifestyle.

And no, she doesn't have a boyfriend yet.
