53) 4/7-8 Itinerary: Nimes - A city where past Rome and present meet

  I left Avignon for Arles late in the evening, at 7:10 PM. When I arrived in Arles around 8 PM, the town was in the midst of a festival. The entire city was bustling, with residents and tourists mingling. I checked several hotels, but they were all full. I had originally planned to spend two days here, enjoying a long-awaited weekend. Unable to resist the urge, I decided to change my plans and head to the ancient Roman city of Nimes, about 40 kilometers away, after visiting Malseille.

We arrived in Nims after 9 p.m. Finding a hotel so late in the night in an unfamiliar place was difficult. We checked into one hotel, but they said there were no rooms available either. We asked the hotel manager for help, and he called several hotels before finally pointing us to one with two rooms. We were deeply touched by his kindness and were able to forget the exhaustion of the day.

After 10 p.m., we barely managed to secure a hotel room and knocked on the door of a nearby Vietnamese restaurant. However, unlike Spain, it closes after 10 p.m. After explaining our situation, we managed to order Vietnamese noodles. Of course, Jeong-gong loves noodles, but today's noodles were exquisite and relieved our fatigue. The next morning, we explored the city of Nimes.

53) 4/7-8(일)여정: 님즈(Nimes)-고대 로마와 현대와의 만남은?-

아비뇽에서 저녁 늦은 시간 오후 7시 10분에 Arles로 떠났다. 8시경 Arles에 도착해 보니 이 마을은 축제가 한창 벌어지고 있었다.

도시 전체가 북적거리며 많은 주민과 관광객이 어울리고 있었다. 몇군데 Hotel을 찾아 보았으나 방이 없단다.

원래 이곳에서 2일 간 쉬면서 오랜만에 주말을 보내고자 계획했던 곳이다. 할 수 없이 계획을 변경키로하고 Arles는 말세이유를 다녀 온 후 Andora로 가는 도중 다시 들리기로 하고 40여 Km 떨어진 고대 로마의 도시 Nimes(님즈)로 차를 달렸다.

님즈에는 밤 9시가 넘어 도착하였다. 생판 모르는 곳에 밤늦게 와서 호텔을 찾는 것은 어려웠다.

한 호텔에 들어 갔으나 이곳도 방이 없단다. 호텔 지배인에게 도움을 청하니 그는 여러 호텔에 전화를 걸어 마침내 방 두 개가 있는 호텔을 가르켜준다.

우리는 그의 친절에 감동하며 오늘의 피로를 잊을 수 있었다.

밤 10시가 지나 간신히 호텔에 방을 정하고 근처 월남 식당에 문을 두드렸다. 그러나 이곳은 스페인과 달리 밤 10시가 넘으면 문을 닫는다.

사정 얘기를 하고 간신히 월남 국수를 주문할 수 있었다. 물론 정공은 국수를 매우 좋아 하지만 오늘의 국수는 최고의 맛으로 우리들의 피로를 풀어 주었다.

다음 날 아침 님즈 시내를 둘러보았다.

Nims is said to derive from the nymph Nemausus, a spring nymph. Like its name suggests, Nims was formed around a gushing spring. A spring even gushes forth from the heart of the old town.

님즈의 '님'이라는 이름은 샘(泉)의 요정 Nemausus(네모자스)에서 유래되엇다고 한다.

이름처럼 님즈는 솟아나는 샘 주위에 형성되었다. 구시가지 한 복판에도 샘이 솟아 나고 있다.

Roman ruins abound. Passing through the alleys, you arrive at the ancient Roman arena. Provence has many... Ancient Roman ruins remain, but Arles and this are said to be the best preserved. This arena, built in the 1st century, is said to be mid-sized among existing arenas, with a capacity of 21,000 spectators

곳곳에 로마 유적이 있다. 골목을 지나 로마 고대 투기장으로 간다.프로방스 지역에는 많은

고대 로마 유적이 지금까지 보존되 있으나 아를과 이곳이 가장 잘 보관되 있다고 한다.

1세기에 건설된 이 투기장은2만 1천명이 관객을 수용할 수 있는 현존하는 투기장 중 중간 수준이라 한다. 

Measuring 133m x 101m, the arena is said to have been the site of brutal Roman slave-on-slave competitions. Since 1988, a roof has been installed in the arena during the winter months, allowing various events to be held year-round.

133mx 101m나 되는 경기장으로 로마 시대 노예끼리 싸우게 하는 잔혹한 경기가 벌어진 곳이라고 한다. 1988년 이후에는

겨울철에는 지붕을 설치할 수 있게 되어 각종 행사가 일년 내내 열린다고 한다.

Dedicated to the descendants of Emperor Augustus in 5 AD, the temple is reminiscent of a Greek temple. The building now used as a modern art museum stands behind it.

서기 5년 아우구스티누스 황제 자손에게 바쳐진 신전, 그리스 신전을 연상케 한다.

지금은 현대 미술관으로 사용되는 건물이 뒷쪽에 있다.

The Pont du Gard, outside Nimes, boasts a Roman aqueduct. Stretching over 50 kilometers, it boasts significant engineering and artistic value, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

님즈 외곽 퐁뒤가르에는 로마 시대 수도교가 있다. 50km가 넘는 수도교로 공학적 예술적 가치가

높아 유네스코 문화유산으로 1985년 지정됨.

After seeing the aqueduct and coming down the mountain, I saw villagers coming here for a hike and enjoying a barbecue.

                                   수도교를 보고 산을 내려 오니 마을 주민들이 이곳에 하이킹을 와서 바베큐를 즐기고 있다.
 

The two women couldn't resist the smell of barbecue and wanted to eat, but since it was given to the villagers, they couldn't afford it, so they just left. The two women were hungry. It was past midnight. However, the restaurant near the parking lot had run out of food, so they had no choice but to drive to a rural village for lunch.

두 여인이 바베큐 냄새의 유혹을 이기지 못하고 먹고 싶어 했지만 마을 사람에게 주는

 것이라 살 수가 없어서 그냥 내려 왔다.

두 여인 은 배가 곺았다. 시간이 12시가 넘었다. 그러나 주차장 근처 레스토랑도

준비된 음식이 다 떨어져 할 수 없이 차를 몰고 어느 시골 마을에서 점심 식사를 했다.

And at around 2:30 PM, we left for Aix-en-Provence, the hometown of Paul Cézanne (6,759 km)

그리고 오후 2시 30분경 폴 세잔느의 고향 악생 프로방스(Aix En-Provance)로 떠났다.(6,759Km)
