계:18:20

자국 우선 주의에 기반한 강대국의 횡포가 기승을 부리는 시대에 강대국과 특권층의 사치와 탐욕이 극에 달했습니다. 불의 한 세상을 보는 의로운 심령은 상합니다. 하지만 주께서는 마음이 가난하고 애통 하는 자가 복이 있다고 하셨습니다. 소망을 가진 이는 세상을 어떻게 살아야 하는가? 공주야! 성경에서 악의 멸망을 기뻐해야 하는 이유는 그 날이 바로 구원의 날이기 때문이다. 힘센 천사가 큰 맷돌을 바다에 던지는 것은 바벨론 멸망을 기념하는 상징 행위일 것이다.

반면에 하늘에서는 승전가가 흘러나오는 장면을 상상해보라. 하나님 나라가 완성되고 어린 양의 혼인 장치가 열렸으니 신부가 준비하고 하객이 초청된다. 요한이 너무 흥분하여 실수 하는 모습이 밉지 않구나. 바다에서 비참하게 떨어져 사라진 큰 맷돌처럼 바벨론은 더 이상 존재감을 느낄 수 없을 만큼 철저히 멸망할 것이다. 흥겨운 음악도 그치고, 경제를 이끌던 기술자들도 보이지 않을 만큼 경제가 몰락했다. 곡식이 없어 낮엔 맷돌 소리도 들리지 않았고, 등불 없는 도시의 밤은 공포 그 자체였다.

혼인이 끊긴 도시는 미래도 없었다. 이 세상에 영원했던 제국은 없다. 영원히 천하를 호령할 줄 알았던 권력들도 하나같이 아무도 기억 못할 운명으로 끝났다. 하나님 나라만 영원하다. 바벨론의 멸망은 하나님의 존귀한 자를 자처하며 영광을 취했고 복술로 만국을 미혹했기 때문이다. 무엇보다도 화려하고 찬란한 도시는 실상 선지자들과 성도들과 순교자들의 피로 물들어있었다. 돈이라는 마술로 인간다운 삶을 약속하지만 실제로는 인간을 물질의 수준으로 떨어뜨리는 사단의 미혹을 경계해야 한다.

돈과 무기로 천하를 호령  하던 세력들의 오만을 부러워 말자. 바벨론의 심판을 기뻐하라는 요청(8:20)에, 하늘의 백성이 승리의 찬가로 화답하며 하나님께 영광을 돌린다. 음행으로 땅을 더럽히고 성도들을 피 흘리게 한 바벨론을 멸하시고 그들의 피를 신원 하시는 하나님의 구원과 능력과 통치를 노래한다. 이렇듯 아무리 절망적인 역사 속에서도 악에 위축되지 않고 희망을 말할 수 있는 이유는 궁극적인 주관자가 하나님이기 때문이다.

Let's not envy the arrogance of the forces who commanded the world with money and weapons. In response to the request to rejoice in the judgment of Babelon (8:20), the people of heaven give glory to God, responding with a hymn of victory. He sings of God's salvation, ability, and rule, which destroys Babelon, who contaminated the earth and made the saints bleed with obscene acts, and identifies their blood. The reason why one can speak of hope without being daunted by evil in such a desperate history is that God is the ultimate organizer.

악을 과대평가하고 하나님을 과소평가할 때 우리는 찬양할 수도, 순종할 수도 없다. 악의 실체를 직시하되, 진정으로 두려워해야

할 분을 두려워할 때 헛된 두려움은 사라지고 담대할 수 있다. 어린양의 혼인 잔치에 청함을 받은 신부는 잔치에 참여하기 위해 자신을 단장하였다. 하나님은 생존과 생계를 위협하며 변절을 요구하는 세상과 우상에게 굴하지 않고 성도의 고귀한 정체성을 잃지

않은 신부를 위해 빛나고 깨끗한 세마포 옷을 준비해주신다. 궁극적으로 사라질 것에 대한 나의 미련이 무엇인가? 불의한 현실을 사는 성도들은 세상을 어떻게 살아야 하는가?

오랜 세월 동안 거센 악의 세력 가운데서도 그리스도의 신부인 교회를 보호하고 양육하시면서 정결하고 흠이 없는 자로 준비하셨다가 이제 마침내 혼인 잔치를 베푸신 나의 위대하신 하나님을 찬양합니다. 결코 망하지 않을 것처럼 위용을 떨치던 부와 사치와 향락의 도시가 큰 맷돌을 지고 수장 되는 것을 보면서 주님 나는 무엇을 생각해야 합니까? 물질이 그리고 사치와 향락이 나를 행복하게 해준다는 저들의 복술은 모두 속임수에 지나지 않았다는 것을 다시 깨닫습니다. 배불러 죽든 배 터져서 죽든 상관하지 말고 나는 오직 주님과 함께 의로운 신부의 자질을 배우고 갖춰 가기만을 소원합니다.
