제 17부 忖適(촌적)......마땅한 것을 헤아림......第74事

  Part 17 : Chonjeok(忖適,촌적)... Discerning What is Fitting... Chapter 74.

忖(촌)은 헤아리는 것이며 適(적)은 마땅한 것이다.

 "Chon (忖,촌)" means to discern (Ponder), and "Jeok (適,적)" Means whst is fitting(Proper).

차가우면서 뜨거운 것을 약속 못한다.'

 One cannot promise warmth while remaining cold.

약하면서 강한 것을 약속 못한다.

 One cannot promise warmth while remaining weak.

소원하면서 친근함을 약속 못하고 가난하면서 富(부)한 것을 약속 못한다.

One cannot promise intimacy while remaining distant, 

and one cannot promise wealth while remaining poor.

그러나 비록 차갑고 약하고 소원하고 가난하다 하더라도 능히 뜨겁고 강하고 친하고 

富(부)한 것을 약속하여 약속을 지킬 수 있는 사람이라야 

그믿음의 성실한 마음을 의지하여 서로가 화합할 수 있다.

  Howeverm even if one is cold, Weak, distant, and poor,

  if they can capable of promising warmth, strength, intimacy, and wealth―

  and actually keep that promise― then by relying on the sincre heart of that faith,

  people can harmonize with one another.

忖은 度也요 適은 宜也라 (촌은 탁야요 적은 의야라)
 "To discern(忖,촌) means to measure,

    and what is fitting(適,적)  means what is proper."

寒不可以約熱이오 (한불가이약열이오)
 "The cold cannot make a covenant of warmth,"

弱不可以約强이오 (약불가이약강이오)
 "The weak cannot make a covenant of strength,"

疎不可以約親이요 貧不可以約富니라 (소불가이약친이요 불빈가이약부니라)
 "The distant cannot make a covenant of intimacy,

   and the poor cannot make a covenant of wealth."

 雖寒弱疎貧이라도 能完約於熱强親富者는 (수한약소빈이라도 능완약어열강찬부자는)
  "Yet, even if one is cold, weak, distant, and poor, those who can perfectly

    fulfill a covenant of warmth, strength, intimacy, and wealth,"

 恃其信慤之相適也니라. (시기신각지상적야니라.)

 "Will find mutual harminy by relying on the sincerity of that faith."
