▣ Top Nine(上九,상구) : Look at past conduct and observe the signs of good and bad fortune.
Complete circle, supreme good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Top Nine] looks back past conduct to examine the signs of good and bad fortune.
Even if joy disappears, it returns again, bringing great fortune to the ruler.
[Commentary]
Look back on past life experiences and track record [
and examine the signs of future good and bad fortune [考祥,고상].
If one has lived uprightly with apure heart [其旋,기선], all that one has done
(comingand going, advancing and retreating, wealth, honor, love, etc) will have resulted
in supreme good fortune [元吉,원길].
The one who laughs last is truly a person blessed with great fortune.
Seeing that the Chinese character '考(고)' (meaning deceased father) appears here,
it must be that the living and the dead 'examine and praise [考祥,고상]
together in harmony for it to be true 'praise/consideration'.
If the highest sacrificial offerings placed on the 'Top' are good for the dead but bad for the living,
it cannot be called 'examining and praising' [考祥,고상], and the reverse is also true.
Looking at the character ' 考(고)'(ancestor/deceased father),
[Top Nine] is considered to carry the 'virtue and blessings of ancestors'.
In other words, this represents a successful case of persuading person '3',
clearing up misunderstandings, and making them an ally,
a position where spirits and anceators grant aid.
This is because [Top Nine] is the only position that responds to and achieves harmony
with preson '3', who is unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
Su Shi(Dongpo) stated that since the relationship between the two people is a position
that hoids the key to the signs of fortune and misfortune(禍福,화복),
one must realize that they should not be separeted even for a day,
and that by restoring/renewing the old ways( [旋,선], there will be great fortune.
Wang Bi also viewed that the omens of fortune and misfortune come from the results
of one's past actions and track record;
having bravely and harmoniously responded to the dangerous 3rd line,
it is not perilous and has turned back into a case of supreme good fortune.
Cheng Yi's interpretation also holds that if everyone has lived virtuously,
it will be supreme good fortune(元吉,원길), but if they have returnedto unvirtuous ways,
it is naturally regarded as greatly inauspicious.
Confucius also explained, "Above, it is auspicious for the ruler, and there are great celebrations,"
citing the Commrntary on the lmage : "Supreme good fortune above means there are great
Shangyue Yuanjinzayang Dayouqingya], clearly indicating that there is a great celebration
in the nation.
To put it metaphorically, it is like the ancestor, the "deceased father [考,고]"
weighing [考慶,고경] disaster and fortune [祥,상] and finally bestowing great biessings.
Therefore, Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi referred to "Xiang [祥,상 - Sang]" as "good/evil and
fortune/misfortune," while Wang Bi, Su Shi, and also Dasan referred to it as
"fortune and misfortune[禍福,화복].
Furthermore, when the 9th(top) line changes, it becomes the hexagram of Lake upon Lake
[重澤兌,중택태], a position where repeated joys come to visit.
Joy responds to the heavens, and great celebrations will come to fill the entire country.
Looking back at the first half of one's past life, It is "Gosang', anf if one has lived well
according to their true nature, it is supreme good fortune [元吉,원길],
but for those who have not, it is inauspicious [不吉,불길].
Zengzi can be cited as a typical figure representing the 9th(top) line.
While many such examples can be seen, the first celebration,
"Looking at past conduct and observing signs [視履考祥,시리고상], is exceptionally beautiful,
and the interpretations of Seongho [星湖,성호] and Seokjae [碩齋,석재] are also excellent.
