김건희 여사의 ‘도이치모터스 주가 조작’ 사건 항소심 재판장을 맡았던 신종오(55) 서울고법 판사가 서울 서초구 법원 청사에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.

경찰과 법조계에 따르면 경찰은 지난 5일 자정 무렵 신 판사 가족 신고를 받고 출동해 서울고법 청사 5층 테라스에서 신 판사를 발견해 병원으로 옮겼다. 경찰은 신 판사가 추락한 것으로 보고 정확한 사망 원인을 파악하고 있다.

신 판사가 사망 당시 입고 있던 옷에서는 유서가 발견됐다. 여기엔 “죄송하다. 스스로 떠난다”는 내용이 담겼다고 한다. 유서에 김건희 여사나 재판에 관련된 내용은 들어 있지 않은 것으로 전해졌다.

신 판사가 재판장을 맡은 서울고법 형사15-2부는 지난달 28일 김 여사의 도이치모터스 주가 조작과 통일교 청탁 혐의 사건을 맡아 징역 4년에 벌금 5000만 원을 선고했다. 이는 1심의 징역 1년 8개월보다 2년 4개월 늘어난 것이다.

재판부는 특히 1심에서 무죄가 선고됐던 도이치모터스 주가 조작에 공범으로 가담한 혐의(자본시장법 위반)를 일부 유죄로 뒤집었다. 윤석열 전 대통령이 당선인 신분이던 2022년 4월 통일교로부터 청탁 목적으로 802만원 상당의 샤넬 가방을 받은 혐의(알선수재)도 1심과 달리 유죄로 판단했다.

신 고법판사는 서울 상문고와 서울대 법대를 졸업하고 사법연수원을 27기로 수료했다.

2001년 서울지법 의정부지원에서 법관 생활을 시작해 울산지법, 대법원 재판연구관, 대구고법, 대전고법 청주재판부 등을 거쳤다. 법원 내에서는 과묵하고 성실하며 원칙을 중요시하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 2023년에는 서울지방변호사회가 선정하는 우수 법관에 이름이 오르기도 했다.

Judge Shin Jong-oh, 55, of the Seoul High Court, who presided over the appeal trial in the case of former first lady Kim Keon-hee’s alleged stock price manipulation of Deutsch Motors, was found dead at the court building in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

Judge Shin graduated from Seoul Sangmo High School and Seoul National University College of Law, and completed the 27th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute. He began his judicial career in 2001 at the Uijeongbu Branch of the Seoul District Court, serving at the Ulsan District Court, as a Research Judge at the Supreme Court, the Daegu High Court, and the Cheongju Division of the Daejeon High Court, among others. Within the court, he was known for being taciturn, diligent, and principled. In 2023, he was also named an outstanding judge by the Seoul Bar Association.
