Mr. Oh, who has been farming his entire life in the countryside, has been enthusiastic about saying that every Korean m

ust visit Egypt since he first visited Egypt with his son and daughter-in-law who live in Seoul in last February.

Mr. Oh says what you must see in Egypt is

Not the Great Pyramid of Giza or the Sphinx,

Nor the Valley of the Kings in Luxor or the Karnak Temple,

Nor the Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan or the Aswan High Dam,

Nor the Temple of Ramses II in Abu Simbel,

Nor the Church of the Refuge and the Church of Moses in Cairo,

Nor the golden mask of King Tutankhamun at the National Archaeological Museum,

Nor the Nile River,

Nor Egyptian beauties,

Nor papyrus,

Nor sugarcane fields,

Nor banana farms,

Nor pineapple farms,

Nor date palms.

Mr. Oh says

You should see the water urns that can be seen anywhere in Egypt.

He says

You should see the water urn placed in front of one’s house along with a glass of water so that any passers-by can drink from it whenever they are thirsty.

Even after visiting Egypt, Mr. Oh says

In front of my house is always a water jar now, though I do not know which continent Egypt is on.

Poetry is food.

To be food for the hungry

To be water for the thirsty

물항아리

시골에서 농투성이로 평생 농사일만 해 온 오씨는 지난 2월 서울 사는 아들 내외를 따라 해외여행이랍시고 처음으로 이집트를 다녀오고 부터는 우리나라 사람들은 누구나 이집트에 꼭 한 번 가보아야 한다고 열을 올립니다 오씨가 이집트 가서 꼭 보라는 것은 기자의 피라미드나 스핑크스도 아니고 룩소르의 왕들의 계곡이나 카르낙 신전도 아닙니다 아스완의 미완성 오벨리스크도 아니고 아스완 하이댐도 아니고 아부심벨의 람세스 2세 신전도 아닙니다 카이로의 예수 피난교회와 모세 교회도 아닙니다 고고박물관의 투탕카먼 왕의 황금 마스크도 아닙니다 나일강도 아니고 이집트 미인들도 아닙니다 파피루스도 사탕수수밭도 바나나 농장 파인애플 농장도 아닙니다 대추야자도 아닙니다 오씨는 이집트 어디에서나 볼 수 있는 물 항아리를 보고 오라고 합니다 지나가는 길손들이 목마를 때에는 누구나 아무 때고 마실 수 있게 물잔과 함께 집 앞에 내놓고 있는 물 항아리를 보고 오라고 합니다 오씨는 이집트를 갔다 오고 나서도 이집트가 어느 대륙에 있는 나라인지는 모르지만 자기 집 앞에 늘 물 항아리와 물잔을 내놓고 있습니다

시는 밥이다.

시는 물이다.

내 시도

배고픈 사람의 밥이 되기를

목마른 사람의 물이 되기를

Appreciation Review 感想

This poem shows how simple acts of kindness can be more important than famous landmarks.

Through Mr. Oh’s story, the poem focuses on the water jars in Egypt, which people use to help strangers quench their thirst.

The repetition of big landmarks emphasizes how special these small acts of giving can be.

Mr. Oh, even though he doesn’t know much about geography, follows this custom by placing water outside his own house.
