더불어민주당이 6·3 지방선거와 동시에 치러지는 인천 연수갑·계양을 국회의원 보궐선거에 각각 송영길 전 대표와 이재명 대통령 최측근인 김남준 전 청와대 대변인을 전략공천했다.

인천시장 출신의 송 전 대표는 ‘전당대회 돈 봉투’ 사건 관련 무죄 확정 후 자신이 5선 국회의원을 지냈다가 이 대통령에게 넘겨준 계양을 출마를 원했지만 상대적으로 보수 세가 강한 연수갑에 출마하게 됐다. 연수갑은 3선 박찬대 의원의 지역구로 박 의원이 민주당 인천시장 후보로 선출되면서 보선이 치러지게 됐다. 민주당은 “연수갑은 민주당에 녹록지 않은 지역이자 반드시 사수해야 할 핵심 전략지역”이라며 “송 전 대표의 중량감을 고려해 전략적으로 배치했다”고 밝혔다.

The Democratic Party of Korea strategically nominated former Representative Song Young-gil and former Cheong Wa Dae spokesperson Kim Nam-jun, a close aide to President Lee Jae Myung, for the National Assembly by-elections in Incheon’s Yeonsu Gap and Gyeyang districts, respectively, held concurrently with the June 3 local elections.

Former Representative Song, an ex-Incheon mayor, had sought to run in Gyeyang, a district he previously represented as a five-term lawmaker before handing it over to President Lee.
