자신을 파괴하는 증오

조지 워싱턴 카버(1864-1943)가 미국의 유명한 교육자가 되기까지는

아주 혹독한 인종차별을 극복해야 했습니다.

George Washington Carver (1864-1943) overcame

terrible racial prejudice to establish himself

as a renowned American educator.

그가 당하는 인종차별에 신랄하게 대처하고 싶은 유혹을 물리치면서

카버는 지혜롭게도 다음과 같은 말을 하였습니다.

“마음속에 간직한 증오는 결국 자신을 파괴시킨다.” 

Spurning the temptation to give in to bitterness

for the way he was treated, Carver wisely wrote, 

“Hate within will eventually destroy the hater.”

에스더서에서 우리는 증오가 사람을 얼마나 무섭게 파괴하는 지를 볼 수 있습니다.

In the book of Esther,

we see how self-destructive hatred can be.

유대인인 모르드개는 페르시아 궁전에서

자칭 위엄 있는 중요 인물이었던 하만에게 절하는 것을 거부하였습니다.

Morde-cai, a Jew, refused to bow down before Haman

-a self-important dignitary in the Persian court.

이것에 분노한 하만은

모르드개와 그의 백성들이 왕국에 위협적인 존재인 것처럼 거짓정보를 조작하였습니다(3:8-9).

This angered Haman, who manipulated information to make Mordecai and his people appear as threats to the empire.

그의 음모가 완성되었을 때 하만은 모든 유대인을 죽이도록

그는 페르시아 왕에게 요청하였습니다. 

 When his scheming was complete,

Haman called on the Persian king to kill all the Jews.

결국 왕은 칙령을 내렸지만,

그것이 시행되기 전에 에스더가 개입하였고 하만의 악독한 음모가 드러났습니다(7:1-6).

The king proclaimed an edict to that effect,

but before it could be car-ried out,

Esther intervened and Haman’s devious plot was revealed.

격분한 왕은 그 음모자가 모르드개를 처형하기 위해 만들어 놓은

교수대에서 하만이 처형되도록 하였습니다(7:7-10).

Enraged, the king had Haman executed on gallows

the schemer had built for Mordecai.

카버의 말과 하만의 행동은 증오는 자신을 파멸시킨다는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다.

Carver’s words and Haman’s actions remind us

that hatred is self-destructive.

성경적인 대응은 증오를 버리고 악을 선으로 갚는 것입니다.

The biblical response is to turn hatred around

and return good for evil.

“악을 악으로 갚지 말라”고 바울은 말했습니다(롬 12:17).

“Repay no one evil for evil,” Paul said.

공격을 당할 때 “친히 원수를 갚지 말라”고(19절) 합니다.

When offended, “do not avenge yourselves”.

대신에 “모든 사람과 더불어 화목하게”(18절) 살 수 있도록 바른 일을 하십시오(17절).

Instead, do what is right that you may live

Esther 에스더 7:1-10  

[에] 7:1	왕이 하만과 함께 또 왕후 에스더의 잔치에 가니라 So the king and Haman went to dine with Queen Esther,
[에] 7:2	왕이 이 둘째 날 잔치에 술을 마실 때에 다시 에스더에게 물어 이르되 왕후 에스더여 그대의 소청이 무엇이냐 곧 허락하겠노라 그대의 요구가 무엇이냐 곧 나라의 절반이라 할지라도 시행하겠노라 and as they were drinking wine on that second day, the king again asked, "Queen Esther, what is your petition?  It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted."
[에] 7:3	왕후 에스더가 대답하여 이르되 왕이여 내가 만일 왕의 목전에서 은혜를 입었으며 왕이 좋게 여기시면 내 소청대로 내 생명을 내게 주시고 내 요구대로 내 민족을 내게 주소서 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty, grant me my life --this is my petition. And spare my people--this is my request.
[에] 7:4	나와 내 민족이 팔려서 죽임과 도륙함과 진멸함을 당하게 되었나이다 만일 우리가 노비로 팔렸더라면 내가 잠잠하였으리이다 그래도 대적이 왕의 손해를 보충하지 못하였으리이다 하니 For I and my people have been sold for destruction and slaughter and annihilation. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king."
[에] 7:5	아하수에로 왕이 왕후 에스더에게 말하여 이르되 감히 이런 일을 심중에 품은 자가 누구며 그가 어디 있느냐 하니 King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, "Who is he? Where is the man who has dared to do such a thing?"
[에] 7:6	에스더가 이르되 대적과 원수는 이 악한 하만이니이다 하니 하만이 왕과 왕후 앞에서 두려워하거늘 Esther said, "The adversary and enemy is this vile Haman."  Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen.
[에] 7:7	왕이 노하여 일어나서 잔치 자리를 떠나 왕궁 후원으로 들어가니라 하만이 일어서서 왕후 에스더에게 생명을 구하니  이는 왕이 자기에게 벌을 내리기로 결심한 줄 앎이더라 The king got up in a rage, left his wine and went out into the palace garden. But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.
[에] 7:8	왕이 후원으로부터 잔치 자리에 돌아오니 하만이 에스더가 앉은 걸상 위에 엎드렸거늘 왕이 이르되 저가 궁중 내 앞에서 왕후를 강간까지 하고자 하는가 하니 이 말이 왕의 입에서 나오매 무리가 하만의 얼굴을 싸더라 Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was reclining. The king exclaimed, "Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the house?" As soon as the word left the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
[에] 7:9	왕을 모신 내시 중에 하르보나가 왕에게 아뢰되 왕을 위하여 충성된 말로 고발한 모르드개를 달고자 하여 하만이 높이가 오십 규빗 되는 나무를 준비하였는데 이제 그 나무가 하만의 집에 섰나이다 왕이 이르되 하만을 그 나무에 달라 하매 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, "A gallows seventy-five feet high stands by Haman's house. He had it made for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king." The king said, "Hang him on it!"
[에] 7:10	모르드개를 매달려고 한 나무에 하만을 다니 왕의 노가 그치니라 So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's fury subsided.

Harboring hatred in the heart Will not lead to success; But following truth and love and grace Will lead to blessedness. Hatred promotes self-destruction; love fulfills Christ’s instruction.

마음속에 미움을 간직하면 성공의 길로 가지 못하고 진리와 사랑과 은혜를 추구하면 축복으로 인도함을 받는다 증오는 자멸을 촉구하고 사랑은 그리스도의 교훈을 실현시킨다.
