  1. Verse of the Day

1)But some troublemakers said, "How can this fellow [Saul] save us?"  2)They despised him and brought him no

gifts. But Saul kept silent.  —1 Samuel 10:27

그러나 몇몇 불량배들은 "이런 사람[사울]이 어떻게 우리를 구할 수 있겠느냐?" 하고 떠들면서 그를 업신여기고, 그에게 예물도 바치지 않았다. 그러나 사울은 못 들은 척하였다.  —사무엘상 10:27

  ▶ Words & Phrases

  1) But some troublemakers said, "How can this fellow [Saul] save us?"

   = But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?”

   = But some worthless people said, “How can this fellow do us any good?”

     * do someone good (= do good to someone) : 누구에게 유익이 되다, 누구에게 좋은 일을 하다

          ▷ do someone good : be beneficial to someone, especially to their health

             ‘the walk will do you good’ (산보는 건강에 좋습니다)

          = But there were some scoundrels who complained, “How can this man save us?”

  2) They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul kept silent. 

   = And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.

      * hold one's peace : 잠자코 있다

   = And they scorned him and refused to bring him gifts. But Saul ignored them.

      * scorn (= despise) : 경멸하다, 무시하다, 업신여기다

  2. Thoughts on Today's Verse

Some 1)folks didn't want Saul to 2)serve them as King because of his 3)simple background and 4)non-aristocratic

family history. So often, we 5)tend to do the same thing today — 6)label people and discount 7)their ability to lead God's people, or serve in God's Kingdom because of their heritage or past. God, however, doesn't look at a

person's 8)pedigree. He searches the heart. So, dear leader, please 9)stick close to the Lord, because you will be

criticized. But please, don't react to every little criticism; instead, 10)devote yourself to  11)serving the LORD

boldly. And to those who follow, do not 12)be quick to dismiss someone as God's leader because she or he lacks

some noble pedigree. Remember the vast variety of people God used in the stories we find in the Bible. Trust that he will be just as creative in his choice of people to lead in our day.

일부의 사람들은 사울이 왕이 되는 것을 원하지 않았는데, 그 이유는 평범한 배경에, 귀족 출신이 아니라는 것이었습니다. 오늘날도 우리들은 같은 행동을 하곤 합니다 — 사람들의 유산이나 과거 때문에 그들을 등급 매기고, 하나님의 백성을 이끌 수 있는 능력즉 교회사역 능력을 깎아 내립니다. 하지만 하나님께서는 한 사람의 가문은 중요하게 여기지 않으십니다. 그 심령을 살펴보십니다. 그러니, 지도자 여러분, 항상 비판받을 것이니, 주님께 항상 붙어 있으십시오. 하지만 개개의 작은 비판들에 반응하지 마십시오. 그 대신에 주님을 담대하게 섬기는데 자신을 헌신하십시오. 혈통성이 다소 부족하다고 하여 순종하는 사람들을 교회 지도자의 자리에서 쉽게 해고하지마십시오. 성경 가운데 하나님께서 사용하셨던 아주 많은 부류의 사람들을 기억하십시오. 하나님께서 현 시대를를 이끌 사람들을 사용하실 때도 과거와 같이 창조적으로 사용하실 것임을 믿으십시오.

  1) folk [fouk] : (보통 folks로 복수 취급) 사람들, 세상 사람들

  2) serve them as King : 왕으로서 국민들을 위하여 일하다

  3) simple : 보통의; 천한, (신분이) 낮은(humble), 평민 출신의

  4) non-aristocratic : 귀족출신이 아닌

    - aristocratic [ərìstəkrǽtik, ӕristə-] : 귀족의

  5) tend to do the same thing

    - tend to 동사원형 : ~하는 경향이 있다

    - do the same thing : 같은 일을 하다

  6) label [léibəl] : 등급을 매기다, 라벨을 붙이다, 꼬리표를 달다

  7) their ability to lead God's people, or serve in God's Kingdom 여기서 or는 즉의 의미로 쓰임

    - their ability to lead God's people = their ability to serve in God's Kingdom

  8) pedigree [pédəgrìː] : 계통, 가계, 가문, 혈통

  9) stick close to ~ : ~에 충실하다, ~에 꼭 붙어 있다

 10) devote oneself to ~ : ~에 일신을 바치다, ~에 전념하다

 11) serve ~ boldly : ~를 담대하게 섬기다

 12) be quick to 동사원형 : 서둘러 ~하다

  3. My Prayer

Dear God, please forgive me for the times I doubted your selection of leaders. Please give me, along with my

1)congregation, the ability to 2)discern who your leaders are 3)in our midst. Please give them the courage to lead unselfishly and faithfully. In Jesus' name. Amen.

사랑하는 하나님, 당신께서 지도자들을 세우셨던 것에 많은 의문을 품었던 것을 용서해주십시오. 우리 신도들 가운데 누가 당신께서 세우신 지도자인지 구별할 수 있는 능력을 제게 주십시오. 이기적이지 않으며 신실하게 이끌 수 있는 용기를 그 지도자들에게 주십시오. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
