NBA Live 06: Freestyle Superstars
A game where it finally means something to be an elite player.
by Jon Robinson
June 14, 2005 - Back in the day, the appeal of the EA Sports basketball games, classics like Lakers vs. Celtics and Bulls vs. Blazers, was the fact that having a superstar on your team actually made a difference thanks to player specific moves. Tom Chambers could double clutch from the three-point line, Jordan swooped in for the reverse, Larry Bird delivered a deadly turnaround J from behind the arc, and Tim Hardaway crossed defenders over utilizing his Utep Two-Step. As the games grew in technology, it seems more emphasis has been made of late to make sure a player has the right tattoo rather than any type of signature move, and I think the games have suffered because of that.
That's why EA Sports decided to bring NBA Live back to the old school. Back to the days where being a superstar in an NBA videogame really meant something. Back to the days where you picked a team based on special moves as much as you did on the roster or team colors. And while you won't see anyone taking off from the three-point line anymore ala my boy Chambers, what you'll see with the new Freestyle Superstars is something that should bring the fun back to EA hoops.
Think about it. The NBA doesn't market their televised games as being the Heat vs. the Suns. The games are sold as Dwayne Wade and Shaq take on Nash and Amare. And you can think of NBA Live 06 as following suit. With the new Freestyle Superstar mode, the best of the best around the league will be given a label, and with that label comes a specific set of user-controlled moves. The elite ball handlers, players like MVP Steve Nash, are called Playmakers. When controlling a playmaker down the court, you have eight different passes you can throw. From going behind your back to a no-look pass to a streaking Sun, you control the type of pass you want to throw by holding down the left trigger while pressing or holding one of the face buttons. For example, holding down the left trigger while pressing A will showoff a bounce pass, but if you hold down the left trigger and hold A, Nash might throw something more stylized like a pass between his legs.
And when throwing a pass down to Amare, Stat can throw down on just about anyone in his path as he is designated as a Power superstar. Similar to passing the ball with Nash, players will again hold down the left trigger while either tapping or holding one of the face buttons while Amare is down low in order dunk the ball. And believe me, there's nothing soft about any of these dunks. Gone are the days where Amare gets a shot blocked at the rim by Bob Sura. Gone are the days when you want to dunk but all you get is some weak looking layup. Now if you've got a power player like Amare or Shaq down low, they are going to dominate the paint.
Here is an exact breakdown of the eight dunks a power player can pull off for the Xbox:
Hold the left trigger and tap A: Two hand, two foot tomahawk, hang on rim
Hold the left trigger and tap Y: Windmill
Hold the left trigger and tap B: Barkley (two hand swing on rim)
Hold the left trigger and tap X: One hand, two foot power tomahawk
Hold the left trigger and hold A: Two hand, two foot tomahawk
Hold the left trigger and hold Y: One hand tomahawk
Hold the left trigger and hold B: One foot, one hand tomahawk
Hold the left trigger and hold X: Two hand power dunk
And like the real NBA, there are only going to be a handful of power players in NBA Live. There are only going to be a handful of playmakers. And there are more player designations to come, including even stoppers on defense who will have defensive specific moves so you can put your best defender up against your opponent's top scorer and see who is more skilled at Freestyle Superstar.
I have to say, after playing the game against the producer, the superstars have changed the gameplay completely. All of a sudden, the Suns play like the Suns with Nash leading the break. Play as the Heat, and Shaq is dunking on people's heads, clearing defenders out of the lane. Other improvements include being able to throw alley-oops on the run, passes that are thrown in transition and on the run instead of the waiting for the passing animation to slow down the play. Defenders who constantly smack the steal button now can deliver hard fouls down low, as all of the action seems to have heavily ramped up the physical nature of the game.
And to capture it all is a completely new graphics engine. A lot of time has gone into making the players not only play more like their real-life counterparts, but look like them as well, and the game looks dramatically better than the 2005 version. You'll even see animations where your superstar will flex after a dynamic slam to help pump up the home crowd or wave his finger after a big block.
This is the year of the superstar, and with the action comes the attitude. With the attitude comes some of the coolest highlights since the days of the Genesis.
Everything old is new again, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
NBA Europe Live
EA Sports sponsors the NBA's Euroleague invasion.
by Jon Robinson
June 14, 2005 - At a time when seven international players are currently competing in the NBA Finals, the NBA detailed further plans to solidify basketball as the world's number one sport.
In a conference call with the media, NBA Commissioner David Stern, Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu, and Electronic Arts Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs Joel Linzner announced that EA Sports would be sponsoring an event where four NBA teams will head to Europe and compete against the top clubs in the Euroleague. As part of the two-year partnership, the four NBA teams will head to Europe to hold training camps in 2006 and 2007, while also competing in a four-team tournament pitting two NBA teams against two Euroleague teams.
"At the culmination of the Exhibition games, there will be a four-team tournament featuring the champion of the Euroleague and the runner-up of Euroleague basketball going against two NBA teams," Commissioner Stern stated. "By the time we finish the Exhibition game, by the time we finish the tournament, we most like will have involved five cities, five countries, as many as eight Euroleague basketball teams, four NBA teams, and we hope that this will demonstrate a commitment to our partners, both in Euroleague basketball and our very good partners at EA Sports. This is a very exciting event for us because this for us is the next step in the development that brings us closer to the fans of basketball in Europe and we now are projecting out for two seasons, the 2006 season and the 2007 season. When you say Europe and you say basketball, the opportunity to partner with Euroleague basketball for us, is an extraordinary opportunity."
NBA and Euroleague teams will be announced at a later date along with the countries where the various teams will be holding their camps. Commissioner Stern hinted, though, that the NBA teams involved will have an international flavor to them to capitalize on the popularity of the stars from Europe who went on to become superstars at the NBA level.
"Years of steady, positive relations between the NBA and Euroleague Basketball have covered diverse aspects of sports organization and this partnership will continue to cultivate the success of basketball in Europe," said Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu. "This partnership will help to continue the tradition of basketball excellence and achievement, contribute to the growth of the sport and will benefit European fans by offering them another chance to enjoy great basketball."
"This is the NBA's most ambitious European basketball competition," said Stern. "NBA Europe Live will exemplify how sports leagues around the world can work together for the long-term growth of their sport. As the relevance of basketball continues to grow globally, the NBA and EA Sports share a vision that delivers basketball, entertainment, music and technology to our fans around the world."
To EA Sports, they see the sponsorship as a way to grow sales of their popular NBA Live series in Europe.
"Our European operation generates almost 50% of our global revenue, much of that on great sports games like soccer, rugby, cricket, and of course, basketball," said EA's Joel Linzner. So when Commissioner Stern and our friends at the NBA suggested that EA partner on this project, we agreed wholeheartedly because we're proud to be an evangelist for one of the world's truly great sports. Although the size of the videogame software market in North America and Europe are roughly similar in size, NBA basketball games represent only about 5% of the videogame sports market in Europe while in North America it's roughly 12%. So we look at this as an opportunity to help the NBA and the Euroleague grow the sport of professional basketball, help it grow in popularity, so that these leagues can be even more successful in Europe and we, of course, can sell more NBA branded videogames."
And does that mean we'll see this as a mode in NBA Live or a new game altogether?
"We have no intention to turn this into a type of FIFA game where you have 19 different leagues and 50 different national teams and 40 different club teams," stated Linzner. "But I can certainly see the day where we are increasing the exposure of both the international teams and the local club teams in the NBA Live product to help make it a truly global product."
