클럽 내 최대 주주인 미국인 억만장자 스탄 크론케가 지분을 28.85%로 늘려 잔여 지분에 대한
매수 요구를 할 수 있는 마지노선 30%확보에 근접하면서
아스날 이사회 내부 미묘한 공작 흐름이 또 다른 국면을 맞이하였다.

크론케는 어제 주 당 £8,500에 160주를 추가 구입하여 클럽 대주주로서 그의 입지를 더욱 강화하였다.
이 같은 움직임은 두번 째 최대 주주인 우즈벡 철강 거물인 알리셔 우스마노프가 유상 증자를 통하여
이적자금 £60m 과 클럽의  £400m 부채 상환에 들어갈 자금을 마련하자고 제안하였지만 이사회에 거부당한 지
단 이틀 만에 이루어진 것이다.

우스마노프는 그의 계획안이 거부당한 것에 실망했다고 인정하였고
단장 이반 가지디스는 아스날의 현 전략이 - 에이레이츠 스테디움은 기본적으로 자기금융이고 이적자금은 넉넉하지 않은 반면 -
효과적이며 그들의 선호 정책으로 남을 것이라고 주장하였다.
과거에 런던 클럽을 인수할 의향이 없다고 밝혔던 크론케가 조용히 지분을 늘려가는 사이
클럽 정책에 대한 견해 차이는 계속해서 벌어지고 있다.

아스날 스쿼드 보강은 생테티엔 미드필더 블레즈 마튀디를  £3m 정도에 영입할 수 있길 바라며 계속 진행중이다.
지난 해 프랑스 클럽에서 주전이었던 21세 선수는 협상을 위해 런던에서 며칠 간 머물렀고
아약스로 부터 영입된 벨기에인 수비수 토마스 베르마엘렌 다음 차례가 될 것이다.

The subtle manoeuvring within the Arsenal boardroom has taken another twist after the American billionaire Stan Kroenke, the club's largest shareholder, increased his stake to 28.58% to edge closer to the 30% threshold that would demand he make an offer for the remaining shares.

Kroenke purchased a further 160 shares yesterday, at £8,500 each, to reinforce his position as the club's major shareholder. The move came just two days after the second largest shareholder, the Uzbek metals magnate Alisher Usmanov, was dismayed to see an offer to underwrite a rights issue that would have generated some £60m for transfers and eaten into the club's £400m debts rejected by board members.

Usmanov admitted his frustration at seeing his scheme thrown out, with the chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, insistent that Arsenal's current strategy – whereby the Emirates Stadium is essentially self-financing and transfer spending is less lavish – is "efficient" and would remain their favoured policy. That difference in opinion continues to simmer while Kroenke, who has indicated in the past that he does not intend to mount a takeover of the London club, has quietly added to his stake.

Arsenal's own squad strengthening continues with the club hopeful of securing the Saint-Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi for around £3m. The 22-year-old midfielder, a regular at the French club last season, has spent the last few days in talks in London and should join the Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen, a £10m acquisition from Ajax, at the Emirates next term.
