55) April 8-9 (Mon) Itinerary: Marseille - A central port city in the Mediterranean since the Roman era -

   Meeting Paul Cézanne in Aix-les-Arc-Saint-Provence brought me great joy. After a 30-kilometer drive, I arrived in Marseille, France's second-largest city. In 200 BC, during the Second Punic War, when Rome began its war against Hannibal, Marseille was a city-state allied with Rome. After becoming a Roman colony in 49 BC, it served as a gateway to globalization.

The Port of Marseille was founded by the Phocaeans (Greeks from Asia Minor) around 600 BC, and has continued to serve as an important port through the Romans to this day. At the entrance to Marseille, you see the Arc de Triomphe. Even though it was Monday, after passing the Arc de Triomphe, the road to the pier and the old town was jam-packed with cars and tourists. I asked a roadside policeman for directions to the pier and arrived just after 7:00. There were a lot of tourists. Because I arrived a little late, I had trouble finding a hotel.

I was on hotel duty when I went to the hotel near the dock, but there were no vacancies. While I was wandering around, a handsome young man saw me and asked if I was looking for a hotel. I greeted him cheerfully, and he suggested we go to his hotel. I followed him to the Mercure Grand Hotel. It was a luxury hotel, but with no other rooms available, I decided to spend two days there, hoping to relax and unwind.

55) 4월 8일-9일(월) 여정: Marseille(마르세유)-로마 시대 이후 지중해의 중심 항구 도시-

악 셍 프로방스의 폴 세잔느를 만났다는 것이 나를 흐믓하게 해준다. 30여 Km를 달려 프랑스의 제 2의 도시 마르세유에 도착했다. 기원전 200년에는 로마가 한니발과 전쟁을 시작한 제2차 포에니 전쟁 때에는 로마와 협력하는 도시 국가였다. 기원 전 49년에 로마의 식민지가 된 후  세계화로 가는 현관 구실을 해 온 주요 도시다.

마르세유 항은 기원전 600년 전에 포카이아 인(소아시아 그리스인)이 항구를 열었고 로마를 거쳐 오늘 날 까지 중요한 항구로서의 역할을 했다.

마르세유 입구에 들어 서니 개선문이 있다. 오늘이 월요일이지만 개선문을 지나니 부두 구시가지로 가는 길은 차와 관광객을 거리가 체워져 있는 것 갔다. 길가의 경찰에게 물어 부두로 가는 길을 안내 받고 7시가 지나 부두에 도착하였다. 수많은 관광객들이 있다. 좀 늦었기에 호텔 구하는데 어려움이 있었다. 호텔 당번인 내가 부두를 끼고 있는 호텔에 가 봤으나 빈 방이 없다. 여기 저기 들려 보는 중 잘 생긴 젊은이가 나를 보고 hotel을 구하느냐고 묻는다. 나는 반갑게 응대하니 자기 호텔로 가잔다. 그를 따라 가 보니 Mercure Grand Hotel이다.  고급 호텔이었지만 다른 곳은 빈 방이 없고 모처럼 기분 좋게 피로를 풀기 위해 2일 간 이곳에서 지내기로 하였다.

The fish market at the quayside at dawn, in front of the hotel, is the famous Marseille quay. My wife and I left for the quayside early. The bright sun, the blue sea, the clear Mediterranean weather, the pleasant atmosphere. Along with the street singers, she sings Édith Piaf. I bought one of her CDs and really liked it.

 새벽 부두의 어 시장, 호텔 앞은유명한 마르세유 부두, 아내와 함께 일찍 부두로 나왔다. 밝은 태양, 푸른 바다로 지중해의 맑은 날씨가 기분이 좋다. 거리의 샹송 가수와 함께, 그녀는 에디트 삐아프의 노래를 부른다. 그녀의 CD 한장을 사니 무척 좋아한다.

관광객으로 분주한 부두, 마르세유 해변을 다니는 유람선이 떠나고 있다. 우리는 저녁에 타기로 했다.

                                              Taking a double-decker tour bus to Marseille, we're approaching the Cathedral.

                                                  2층 관광 버스를 타고 마르세유를 보면서 가다. Catedral로 접근하고 있다.

                                                There were many restaurants and bars on the pier, including seafood restaurants.

                                                 부두가 레스토랑에서, 부둣가에는 해물 레스토랑, Bar가 많았다.

                                  We took a cruise in the evening with the Mercure Grand Hotel where we stayed in the background.

                                              Today, Jeonggong looks like a refreshing hensom boy.

                                                      오늘은 정공이 산뜻한 헨섬 보이로 보인다.

                                  If Island, off the coast of Marseille: Once upon a time, there was a prison here. It's also the island featured                                     in the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo," where the protagonist, Monte Cristo, was imprisoned.

    After a comfortable two-night stay in Marseille on April 8th and 9th, I'm feeling somewhat refreshed. The next day, I'll be going to Arles, a place I hadn't visited the last time, to see the love fight between Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. The thought of that makes me very excited.

                    4월 8일과 9일 밤 이틀 밤을  마르세유에서 푹 지내니 어느정도 피로가 풀렸다.

                    다음날은 지난 번 들리지 못했던 Arles에 가서 반 고흐와 폴 고갱의사랑 싸움을 볼 것을

                   생각하니 무척 내 마음을 들뜨게 한다.
