11. Ji Cheon Tae / Hexagram 11 : Tai-Peace-2.
▣ Xiang says : Heaven and Earth intermingle, forming Tai.
Thus, the ruler manages and completes the way of Heaven and Earth,
assists and harmonizes with the appropriateness of Heaven and Earth,
thereby supporting and guiding the people.
[Explanation]
The Xiang Commentary says :
The image of Heaven and Earth interacting and male and female coming into harmony
is the picture of Tai(泰,태 -Peace).
The ruler (sovereign) should regulate all matters in accordance with the movement
of the Way of Heaven and Earth, and cooperate through the prorer principles
of Heaven and Earth to lead the people to a place of peace and comfort.
[Commentary]
The Xiang(象,상) states that the image of Heaven and Earth intermingling
and Yin-Yang harmonizing is the picture of Tae(泰,태).
It is the season when spring water(春水,춘수) pours out from the melting ice
and snow [舂,용] ―this is Tae(泰,태).
When Heaven and Earth harmonize, all things rise up supporting the aerth;
when Yin and Yang harmonize, Yin takes charge of its vital breath(胎氣,태기) first.
In the season when Heaven and Earth intermingle(交泰,교태),
the ruler looks after the people benevolently like a mother [后,후].
Here, 'Jae-seong(財成,재성),' meaning to plan and design the way of Heaven and Earth,
implies cutting and completing [裁成,재성], which means to tailor and manage resources.
This signifies that financial administration(財政,재정) is absolutely necessary to make
the ways of the nation and the family successful.
Material wealth is likewise crucial in widely spreading one's realization
and good deeds [善業,선업].
Furthermore, matching the climate of Heaven and Earth and the nature of the earth [
having each group of people take charge of appropriate labor, farming properly,
and utilizing resources correctly is 'Bo-sang(輔相,보상).'
Therefore, what is meant for rice paddies is used as paddies,
and what is meant for fields is used as fields.
In other world, Jae-seong(財成,재성) refers to a general principle in a broad sense,
while Bo-sang(輔相,보상) refers to specific details in a narrow sense.
Hewever, Dong-pa explains as follows, stating that Jae-seong(財成,재성) and Bo-sang(輔相,보상)
are absolutely necessary measures to avoid encountering times of stagnation ( 否塞,비색) :
(..... continues on the following page)
"When things reach the peak of Tae(泰,태 -Peace), there is nothing further to add.
By tailoring and perfecting them through the way of Heaven and Earth,
and by rectifying them in accordance with what is appropriate for Heaven and Earth,
one helps the people so that they do not fall into the state of Bi(否,비 - Stagnation),
thereby continuing to elevate peace for the people."
When a husband acts like a husband and a wife acts like a wife,
this is 'Bo-Sang(輔相,보상 - assisting and harmonizing).
If righteousness and propriety become obscured and blocked,
human morality falls into disorder.
The way grand harmony(Tae-tong) is not far away.
It exists right in eating when hungry and drinking water when thirsty.
'Jae-seong(財成,재성 - planning and managing)' is the duty of superiors,
while 'Bo-Sang(輔相,보상 - assisting) is the duty of subordinates.
Just as the energy of spring(春氣,춘기 - Chun-gi) makes spring law by propagating all things,
and the energy of autumn(秋氣,추기 - Chu-gi) makes autumn law by ripening and harvesting
all things, one assists(輔相,보상) what is appropriate for Heaven and Earth to support
(輔助,보조) the people on both left and right.
Cheng Yi (程子,정자) said :
"'Jae-seong(裁成,재성)' is suppressing excess(過,과), and 'Bo-Sang(輔相,보상)'
is supplementing deficiency (不及,불급)."
Viewing this through Ji-ok's Seon-hae :
"'The Way of Heaven and Earth ( 天地之道,천지지도)' represents Jeong-hye(定慧,정혜 - Samadhi
and Wisdom) fully cultivated in the mnd, and 'The Appropriateness of Heaven and Earth
(天地之宜,천지지의) is the application of Jeong-hye(定慧,정혜).
Also, 'Jae-seong Bo-sang(財成輔相,재상보상) assists spiritual practice(修行,수행 - Su-haeng).
'Supporting and guiding the people(以左右民,이좌우민) means that one is not harmed
by the two demons of strength and softness(强軟二魔,강연이마),
but rather turns those two demons into attendants(侍者,시자)."
Here, 'Hu-i (后以,후이)' is a political expression similar to 'Seon-wang-i (先王以,선왕이 - former kings thus)', whereas 'Dae-in-i (大人以,대인이 - great men thus)' and 'Gun-ja-i (君子以,군자이 -
noble persons thus)' can be considered Taoist/philosophical expressions.
