Shine City Project
Boulder Basin – Lake Mead
October 26, 2019
On October 26, 2019, Shine City Project made its way to Lake Mead! Just a 40-minute drive from Las Vegas, Lake Mead is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River that formed after the completion of the Hoover Dam in 1935. Lake Mead has a vital role in supplying water to the southwestern region of the United States to Arizona, California, and Nevada, as well as parts of Mexico. Because of drought and increased demand, water has become an increasingly precious resource in the area.
On this last Saturday of October, our Shine City Project volunteers drove from Las Vegas to Lake Mead to help assist park rangers in picking up litter from the Boulder Basin area of Lake Mead. Our efforts to clean up the shoreline and desert areas of the lake were in part for the nationwide Make a Difference Day which is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of October. We had fourteen volunteers representing Shine City Project while two of our volunteers were joining us for their first time! Though there was not so much trash that could be found, we were still able to appreciate the cleanliness and the beauty of Lake Mead even more.
After the cleanup, we had time to enjoy a delicious lunch at Boulder Beach that had been prepared by our volunteers! Our volunteers had brought hand-made California rolls, pasta with tomato sauce, pinwheel rolls, fruit, and other snack, food, and drink items for everyone to enjoy. After some much-needed nourishment and energy, we enjoyed some time along the shoreline of Lake Mead. While some had fun playing with the water such as skipping rocks or splashing it onto others, others stayed dry with Frisbee and volleyball. Overall, it was a good bonding experience with each other, and we hope that we can make new redeterminations to help our community!
