Team USA's flaws started at the top

Jim Paxson abides by the code. The Cavaliers' general manager doesn't criticize coaches, much less America's Coach, Larry Brown, who resides in the same division with Detroit.
Still, he wonders what LeBron James did wrong to get himself stapled to the bench at the Olympics. "Gregg Popovich [USA assistant coach] said LeBron worked hard and was coachable," said Paxson, who has not talked with James yet.
"Against Australia, he did a good job in passing the ball with his height against the zone," Paxson added. "In the second Lithuania game [the bronze-medal game], he changed the pace with his energy. He got called for traveling at times, which won't happen in the NBA."

클리블랜드 단장인 짐 팩슨은 룰을 지키는 사람이다. 그는 평소 코치들을 비난하지

않는 사람이다. 따라서 미국 대표팀 코치였던 래리 브라운을 비난하는 일은 상상도

할 수 없던 일이었다. 하지만 그는 르브론 제임스가 올림픽에서 벤치에 앉을 정도로

무엇을 잘못했는지 궁금해한다. 팩슨은 아직 제임스와 대화를 나누지는 못했지만 그

렉 포포비치 코치가 르브론이 열심히 했고 지시를 잘 따랐다는 말을 인용하고 있다.  

"호주와의 경기에서도 그는 신장을 이용한 패스게임을 잘 했고, 리투아니아와의 경기

에서도 그는 열정으로 경기의 흐름을 바꾸었다. 비록 때때로 엔비에이룰로는 적용되지 않는 트래블링 파울을 범하기도 했지만 말이다."

Brown had a double standard. Players had to be uniformly supportive, while he could criticize the shortcomings of the team anytime he wanted to.

"Larry loves being the underdog," said Paxson. "It's his nature to downplay. But maybe this group needed more belief. Larry was perceived as the favorite, fairly or not."
Brown's suspension of James, Amare Stoudemire and Allen Iverson for the first exhibition game for being late to a team meeting was, said Paxson, "done to show the players, 'We're all in this together.' "
Sources said Stoudemire was one minute late, Iverson five, and James a comparatively whopping 18. "Being late is not a part of his behavior with us," said Paxson.
Brown usually does not play young players, who are expected to sit and say they like it. "From what I heard, Dwyane Wade was the guy who never said anything or complained. Carmelo Anthony was the squeakiest wheel," said Paxson.
The inference is James was in the middle, complaint-wise.

야 한다는 것이며, 반면에 그렇지 못할 경우에 그는 원할 때마다 팀의 결점을 비난할

수 있다.   "래리는 충성하는 선수와 함께 하는 것을 좋아한다. 그것이 그의 본성이다.

하지만 가장 중요한 것은 그것보다는 믿음일지도 모른다. 래리는 믿음보다는 자신을

위주로 이루어지는 것을 좋아한다." "브라운의 제임스, 스토드마이어, 아이버슨에 대

한 출장정지 처분은 선수들에게 보여주는 것이었다. 우리는 모두가 하나라는 것을."
소식통에 의하면 스토드마이어는 1분, 아이버슨은 5분, 제임스는 18분 늦었다. "늦었

다는 것은 브라운에게는 하나라는 것을 무시하는 행동이었다."라고 팩슨은 언급했다

"브라운은 앉아서 말하고 싶어하는 젊은 선수들과 보통 상대를 하지 않는다. 내가 들

은 바로는 드웨인 웨이드는 결코 어떤 것도 말하지 않고 불평도 하지 않았다. 반면에

카멜로 엔쏘니는 자신의 생각을 분명히 말하는 타입이었다."라고 팩슨은 말했다. 제

임스는 그 중간정도였다.

Brown also never seemed to get a handle on the international game. "George Karl told me Larry always tries to defend the paint first. But in international ball, you have to play defense outside-in and defend the arc first," said Paxson.

Karl was called the national dunce when he coached the sixth-place Americans in the 2002 World Championships.
But now there's Brown, who daily poisoned the confidence of a young team, who had an unselfish, special player in James and misused him, and who got the tactics backward. America's Team was flawed, including James. So was its coach.

브라운은 또한 국제 경기 조율능력이 떨어지는 것처럼 보였다. 조지칼은 나에게 래리

는 페인트존에서 방어를 처음에 하려고 한다고 말했다. 하지만 국제경기에서는 디펜

스의 폭을 바깥으로 넓혀야만 한다. 칼은 2002 세계 선수권대회에서 6위를 할 때 코

치를 했고 그당시 바보라고 비난받았었다. 그러나 이제는 브라운의 몫이다. 비이기적

이고 특별한 선수인 제임스를 가지고 있는 젊은 팀의 믿음을 나락으로 떨어뜨렸고 그

것의 중심에는 선수들도 있었지만 코치역시 마찬가지였다.
