1970년에 보스턴에서 결성된 미국의 록 밴드로 아메리칸 하드 록의 전설로 1970~80년대를 주름잡던 록 밴드 중 하나입니다. 음반 판매량 누계 1억 5000만 장 이상으로 역사상 가장 영향력 있고 위대한 록 밴드 중 하나이며 상업적으로 가장 성공한 밴드 중 하나입니다. 여러 할리우드 영화의 OST에도 참여하여 그들의 음악을 영화에서도 심심찮게 들을 수 있습니다.

멤버는 보컬 스티븐 타일러, 기타리스트 조 페리와 브래드 휫퍼드, 베이시스트 톰 해밀턴, 드러머 조이 크레이머. 조이 크레이머와 브래드 휫퍼드는 버클리 음악대학 출신입니다. 1979년부터 1983년 사이 잠시 멤버 변동이 있었으나 곧 원상복귀되었습니다. 그룹의 시작은 1964년에 미국 뉴햄프셔주에 있는, 작은 도시 스너피에서 스티븐 타일러가 결성한 더 스트레인저스입니다. 후에 밴드 이름을 체인 리액션으로 고친 후 비틀즈와 롤링 스톤스의 노래를 다른 버전으로 부르기도 했습니다. 그리고 같은 해에 데모 버전의 록 앨범을 내기도 하는 등의 활동을 하였습니다.

1970년에 결성되었음에도 불구하고 아직까지도 왕성한 활동을 벌여서 많은 팬들을 경악하게 했는데 결국 2017년에 마지막 월드 투어를 한다고 했으나, 이를 번복하고 2019년에 밴드의 50주년 투어를 또 할 것이라고 발표했습니다. 2024년 8월 2일, 투어 은퇴를 선언했습니다. 스티브 타일러의 목상태가 더 이상 돌이킬 수 없을 지경에 이르렀다고, 2023년 경 후두결절 이후 회복이 안되었다고 합니다.
