A team from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences created a catalyst that harnesses light energy, such as sunlight, to break down chemical bonds in plastics within days.
This is the first reported process that can completely break down a non-biodegradable plastic such as polyethylene using visible light and a catalyst that does not contain heavy metals, said Assistant Professor Soo Han Sen from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
This photochemical reaction is more environmentally friendly than most recycling methods, which involve heating, generating greenhouse gases as a by-product.

Greta Thunberg was named Time magazine’s person of the year for 2019 and is the youngest person to have ever received the accolade. Thunberg, 16, was lauded by Time for starting an environmental campaign in August 2018 camping out in front of the Swedish parliament to demand action. The activist addressed the latest round of UN climate talks in Madrid bluntly criticizing world leaders for using PR to make it appear they are achieving bold climate targets. Other nominees for person of the year included Donald Trump and the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress.

Mariah Carey's holiday juggernaut "All I Want for Christmas Is You" just this week topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in the song's 25-year history.
The newfound chart dominance of "All I Want for Christmas" — it climbed as high as No. 3 last holiday season — can be chalked up to any number of factors, including nostalgia, the ever-growing influence of streaming services and the fact that "All I Want for Christmas" has aged remarkably well.
Now, at least for this particular week in December 2019, Carey's classic doesn't just represent the last word in holiday songs; it's the last word in songs, period.

As Britain’s vote launches the country’s exit from the European Union into a new and difficult phase, the bloc is cementing a top goal: Halting more EU defections.
The bruising 3½-year Brexit process has been so negatively viewed by European voters that even EU-skeptic parties on the Continent have mostly dropped talk of leaving the bloc or the euro, including Frexit and Italexit.
That could change if the UK secures a trade deal with the EU that gives it greater national sovereignty without hurting its economy and Brexit comes to be seen as a success for Britain. But the likelihood is that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new government will confront painful trade-offs after its EU membership ends on Jan. 31.
