Modern Argentin Tango Disussion Forum 이에요.
'Leader and follower' is very two-dimensional, which is why it is so popular with most people. I prefer a range of other analyses, for instance yin and yang. E.g. the woman is yin, with yang core and the man is yang with yin core. (The contrast at the core is what most lifestyle taoists miss out, but think of the yin-yang symbol.)
So the man [usually] leads overtly, the woman has an internal, intangible lead. I find it works best when both partners are trying to fool the other into thinking they're in charge!
OR:
Tango is a dance of two followers.
The man follows the movement of the dance floor, the realities of the situation with his woman, the music and his ego - hopefully in that order.
The woman follows the situation with the guy, the music and her ego - ditto. So, the only difference is that the guy is the one who negotiates with the other guys. Which is essential, you can't have two people driving. And that works nicely: ideally the guys have all trained together, danced together, have formed an intense bond, are moving in a group as one. (This is why I HATE mixed-sex tango classes. Whose idea were they? The ballroom dance teachers, that's who!) Like a Mexican wave.
OR:
The man navigates while the woman leads.
OR:
Many other ways of looking at it...
Remember, the man can't step until the woman has begun. Golden rule of tango. He sets it up, she gets on with making it into something special.
I like the image of the men being a room full of blank canvases, moving themselves around the room. Each one has a female artist standing before him, painting a new world upon a moving target. How many women think about what they're _doing_ to their partner? Instead of just being concerned with obedience, or at best, negotiation. (And their appearance, of course.)
/...oops, is that the tango police at the door?
I'm a traditionalist, really! But traditional to the really early tango. A time when it seems that women hadn't been taught to confuse 'feisty' with 'assertive', for instance.
