전시내용

갤러리 담에서는 4년만에 오사카에서 활동중인 일본 작가 Takeshi Machiya의 전시를 준비하였다.

이전 작품에서는 <너는 내가 아니야>시리즈에서는 가면을 쓰고 살아가는 현대인의 슬픈 현실을 페리소나에 빗대어 작품을 하였다.

작가는 바닷가나 주변 공사장, 혹은 버려진 가구에서 주운 나무들을 재구성하여 다듬어 작업하고 있다. 오랫동안 평면작업을 하였으나 10여년 전부터는 자신을 위한 장난감을 만들다가 오브제 작업을 하게 되었다고 한다. 작가는 나무의 질감을 곱게 표현하기 보다는 거친 조각 칼로 속도감 있게 깎거나 잘라내서 형태를 만들어 그 위에 아크릴, 금박, 은박 등의 물감으로 채색 작업을 하였다.

이번 전시 작품에서는 작가의 유년기의 만화와 에니메이션에서 봤던 캐릭터 <울트라P>를 비롯하여 새로운 외계에 사는 <별나라 사람> 시리즈와 <기차 철도 위에서 춤추는 아이>와 < 가재 손을 가진 사람>이 등장한다. 이처럼 작가의 작품을 보노라면 우리의 유년기의 추억과 놀이를 떠올라 즐거움을 줄 수 있으리라 생각된다. 어릴적

Machiya는 오사카예술대학에서 미술을 전공하였으며 이번이 25번째 개인전이다. 이번 전시에는 <아이들>, <창가의 여자>, <달마>를 비롯하여 25여점이 출품될 예정이다. 

작가의 글

나의 만들기의 시작은 초등학교 종이에 그리기가 아니라 친구들과 놀기 위해 나무젓가락과 커터칼과 본드로 만들던 작은 장난감이었습니다.
모티브가 되었던 것은 당시 TV로 방영되고 있던 만화나 SF 영화에 등장하는 비행기나 배, 그리고 로켓이었습니다, 그것은 모험이나 미래에 대한 동경의 형태였습니다.

이 무렵부터 전자제품인 TV나 레코드 플레이어나 라디오 카세트에도 관심이 생겼습니다. 그것은 엔터테인먼트 미디어입니다.

내가 만드는 작품의 객체에 서브컬처와 팝 무브먼트가 관련된 것은 이 경험에서 입니다.
거기에 또 하나의 객체인 원시문화(프리미티브 컬쳐)를 거듭 작품 제작을 하고 있습니다.
그것은 선사에서 온 사람들이 살아온 순수함을 느끼기 때문입니다.
거기에는 현대에는 잃어가고 있는 애니미즘과 같은 정신이 있고, 앞으로의 우리 사회에는 형태 있는 것에 대한 경의가 더 필요하지 않을까 생각하기 때문입니다.

나무는 애니미즘의 상징이며, 제가 작품 소재로 모으고 있는 나무는 다양합니다, 저보다 오래 사는 나무도 있는가 하면 가옥이나 가구였던 것, 바다나 강이나 산이나 거리에서 주운 것, 이국에서 온 것, 최신 합판 등 여러 종류를 믹스하여 제작하고 있습니다.
그것은 살아온 환경이나 시간이 다른 사람들의 새로운 만남과 여정을 작품을 통해 표현하고 싶기 때문입니다.

팬데믹, 전쟁, 아직 불안한 나날이 계속되고 있는 세계이지만, 우리는 겨우 사람의 얼굴을 되찾은 것처럼 느낍니다.
나는 얼굴이라는 것, 사람이라는 것을 더 알고 싶고 그리고 표현해 나갔다고 생각합니다.

＊Artist statement    2023

 I started my creative activities when I was six years old.

 I used “WARIBASHI"(cheap wooden chopsticks) and assembled with utility knifes and wood glue.

 These materials were very familiar to young kids in Japan.

 The earliest works included palm-sized airplanes, ships, rockets, etc. 

 The motifs of these works were rides that appeared in "MANGA" and science fiction movies that were broadcasted on TV at that time.

 And I also expressed my adventures and longing for the future to them.

From this point on, I became interested in electrical appliances such as TVs, record players, and radio cassette recorders.

 And I felt from their existence that they were not only "media of entertainment" but also feel like living things.

 From these my personal experiences that subcultures and pop-music trends, fashions,  and movements have become an important element of my work.

 And finally,  I complete my works by adding elements of primitive culture that are completely different.

 This is because I feel it is important to value the purity of the culture inherited by prehistoric people.

I believe there is a spirit of animism that is being lost in modern times, and I think that our society in the future needs more respect for what is in shape.

Trees /Woods are symbols of animism. So, I collect different kinds of woods as materials for my works. 

 Some of these wood pieces lived longer than I do, and I make a mix of different kinds of things, such as from old houses and furniture, or things I picked up from

the sea, rivers, mountains and towns, things from other countries, and the latest plywood.

The reason I do this is because I want to express the new encounter and departure of people of different environments and times through my works by combining pieces of wood from various backgrounds.

Pandemics, wars, and the world is still in a state of anxiety, but I feel that we have finally regained our human faces.

I would like to know more about faces and people, and I would like to express myself.
