<Dying for an iPhone> Book Talk📚📱
<Dying for an iPhone>, a report on the labor conditions of Foxconn, the ‘electronics empire’ that produces Apple products!
In the wake of a series of suicides by Foxconn workers in 2011, the authors infiltrated the numerous Foxconn factories around China to meet with workers and dig up the truth. The research exposed the atrocious working conditions that caused the workers to jump out from their dormitories, and interrogated what responsibilities the government and capital had fulfilled. While reading this book, we could not but recall the actions of SHARPS and struggles of victims that exposed Samsung's occupational disease problem and demanded responsibility from the government and companies. In a book talk with the book's Korean translators back in March, a Samsung worker stated that "Samsung is Apple and Foxconn."
For this event, author Jenny Chan meets a SHARPS activist online for a discussion. Starting with the stories of two workers, the realities of workers in the semiconductor and electronics industry, the responses by governments and corporations, and the struggles of workers will be shared.
The event was organized to commemorate International Workers' Memorial Day(April 28th) and May Day(May 1st). The discussion will be held in both Korean and English with sequential interpretation.
