Spring Time of Life
청춘
Isn't there a way of not growing old? This is a pain and question to mankind. How agreeable not to be old?
Just a name of 'A spring time of life' is actually fresh. Sweet-smelling natural beauty makes those around feel pleasing. Vital lips and tight skin without makeup can be kept for 24 hours.
* those around ; 주위
Even wearing shoes folded up may not be unpleasant, and even untrimmed hair seems to be spruced up. By the way, such a time is pitifully too short. Women may become old from 25 years old, and men may become old from 28 years old.
* By the way ; 그런데
From morning, a laywoman was whimpering in front of the Buddha. I let her cry without asking, because I think it is better to cry to the full as one wants to cry. After a long while, she knocked at the door. Swollen eyes were unshapely, but it seemed not to be serious problem.
"Now that you cried so, what did Buddha say?"
I naturally asked her with a silly snicker. She simpered feeling sorry to do such a troublesome.
* Now that ; ~이니까 * snicker ; 숨죽여 웃는 웃음 * simper ; 억지로 웃다
"Venerable, I heard a shocking word from my husband today. He saw my face for a while and said that I became quite old and he went out quickly. I was also shocked to see the face in the mirror of my room. My tight face became crumbly, and my eyes became finely wrinkled. I haven't known yet that I become old, because I believe what my husband has always said ; he loves me."
During talking to me, she touched the cheek and took out the mini mirror from the handbag with tearful eyes. She watched the face near and far in the mirror and made lots of facial expression.
I said with a sharp word,
"Bosalnim, your life is already completed. Only your husband may live with you, even a blind bird will never concern you again."
She expected me to console her, but I didn't. So she felt frustrated and quite sore to hear like that.
"Venerable, do you add oil to the fire? How can you tell me without savng the painful mankind?"
Furthermore, she was whimpering with making use of a handkerchief. The situation was getting worse and worse. I felt disadvantageous, so I threw a super-powerful bomb.
"I have nothing to do with your getting old. What a disturbance, from the morning! Go home quickly."
* have nothing to do with ; ~와 상관없다 * disturbance ; 방해, 소란
The laywoman stood up rashly,
"What a monk like this! I'll eat my hat if I come here again. Is this the only temple near here?" and she went out.
* rashly ; 돌연히, 성급히
In the evening, the chief priest heard of that happening and called me to tell of that laywoman. He said he severely scolded her for the taletelling. Next day, she came again holding a beverage box. She got emaciated.
"Venerable, I'm sorry to have troubled you yesterday. I'll repent of it."
I felt pitiful in turn and told her something.
"Bosalnim, don't avoid the heat in hot days, and don't avoid the cold in cold days. If one is lazy due to the heat, he will begin feeling more the heat. And if one is shrunken due to the cold, he will begin feeling more the cold. Our life is the same thing. You should jump in being old. That's just the way you will be unaware of being old, and you won't be old. Do whatever you can. You should do anything. You'd better either acquire a taste or serve to the community."
* avoid ; 피하다 * due to ; ~ 때문에 * whatever ; 무엇이든
* acquire ; 잡다, 획득하다
I gave her homework; 108 prostrations a day for 100 days, chanting and reflecting on Bodhisattva for one hour. After that, the laywoman became bright. The elegance and splendor I had never seen before began to appear in her face.
"Venerable, I'm happy and all is going well. I entered the volunteer association as well."
* prostration ; 절 * splendor ; 빛남 * as well ; 또한
If the mind is extremely peaceful, and whatever it is young or not, is such a nominal body useful? There's a zest when young, on the other hand ,there's another zest when old.
* extremely ; 지극히, 매우 * nominal ; 이름뿐인, 명목상, 유명무실한
* whatever ; 무엇이든 * zest ; 멋, 묘미 * on the other hand ; 다른 한편
