[000] Now, the Rest of the Story.
[001] Bob was a Midwestern boy in love with the dark, with the
magical wondrous world of radio.
[002] Born before the United States had even entered World War
II, Bob grew up in radio's so-called "hay day."
[003] But it was more than that.
[004] Radio gave something to Bob that nothing else could.
[005] What did he listen to? Ha, well, what did he not hear?
[006] His favorite shows included "Inner Sanctum" and "The Lone
Ranger," "This is Your FBI," "Fibber Mcgee and Molly," "
The Fat Man" and "The Shadow."
[007] There was a program called "Suspense" whose creaking door
sound effect was more horrible, Bob thought, than
anything else that he could imagine.
[008] And the nerve-wrecking stories comprising that series
tied the boy's stomach in knots for week after week.
[009] "Inner Sanctum" Bob liked because it blended horror and
humor.
[010] "The Lone Ranger," that was the sound of clinking spurs
and spinning buckboard wheels that Bob found especially
fascinating.
[011] And Lamont Cranston/The Shadow, mysterious man of wealth
and science. What a thrill it was even pretending to be
he!
[012] And who could resist the spine-tingling theme music of
"Dragnet" or the uncontrollable laugher that flowed from
"The Colgate Comedy Hour."
[013] Years later, Bob would write that because of radio,
nothing lay beyond the reach of his mind's eye.
[014] All I needed, he says, all I needed to know about San
Francisco was that Paladin lived in a hotel there and his
gun was for hire.
[015] I used to quiver with excitement listening to those
shows, Bob says, they gave me clues how the world worked,
they fueled my daydreams and made my imagination work
overtime.
[016] Even the commercials engaged the boy.
[017] Before I'd ever gone into any department store, he said,
I was already an imaginary consumer.
[018] I pretended I used Lava Soap and shaved with Gillett Blue
Blades, and was on Boliva Time and was putting Vitalis in
my hair, and used Feenamint and Dr. Lyon's tooth
powder--mental pictures!
[019] That's what radio was all about.
[020] Bob once met a sound effect artist from the golden age of
radio and promptly he was full of questions for this
beautiful unseen hero in his childhood.
[021] "How did you ... how did you make the sound of the
electric chair?" Bob asked, and the old gentleman
confided it was sizzling bacon."
[022] "And bones breaking?" "Well, you just hold the microphone
close, and take a LifeSaver and crush it between your
teeth."
[023] Hearing that, Bob laughed with excitement even though he
was no longer a little boy.
[024] He was a grown man revelling in fond memories forever
inspired by the radio days.
[025] And oh yes, he was now a songwriter and you know his
lyrics.
[026] Ooh Ooh, The world knows his lyrics!
[027] Full of fantastic mental pictures, such as "the ancient
empty streets too dead for dreaming" and "to dance
beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
silhouetted by the sea."
[028] Incomparable imagery, a gift as it were,
[029] From the men and women who wrote universes behind the
curtain of airwaves and who once so delighted a wonder-
filled child from Hibbing, Minnesota, a boy you know as
Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan!
[030] Only now you know the rest of the story.

[000] 이제 the Rest of the Story입니다.
[030] 단지 이제야 당신은 the rest of the story로 알고 계십니다.
