New Year’s resolutions
What are your New Year’s resolutions for 2013?
I have two resolutions this year.
One of them is to quit smoking.
I have been trying to stamp out my smoking habit for the last two years and I have failed miserably.
I’ve tried over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies like nicotine patches and gum.
I’ve tried one of those electronic cigarettes as well.
Obviously those didn’t help at all.
I have resolved to make this year the year to kick my smoking habit.
My second resolution is to improve my spoken English.
In the past, I have been focusing on exam preparation when it comes to studying English.
But now, I really want to improve my speaking skills.
I’m going to tune in to EBS FM every morning!

Drinking Etiquette
Talk about drinking etiquette in Korea.
Have you ever committed a faux pas while drinking?
Drinking etiquette in Korea is pretty established.
Drinking is a way to release inhibitions and a prelude to better business relations.
“Going Dutch” used to be obsolete when drinking.
And these days, younger people will pay by this method.
But the norm is that one person will take care of the bill.
Custom dictates that this is usually the eldest or highest ranking person in your party.
Also, never fill your own glass.
And make sure to fill another’s empty glass, especially if they are older or higher in status than you.
When someone offers you alcohol, hold your cup with both hands to show respect.

Talk about Hwacheon Sansheoneo Ice Festival
One of the great things about Korea is that there are so many festivals you can enjoy all year around.
Even when the weather outside is frightfully cold, Koreans just know how to have great festivals.
In fact, there is an ice fishing festival that gets better when the weather gets colder.
Every January, hundreds of thousands of people armed with thick jackets flock to the frozen Hwacheon Stream in Hwacheon County to try their hand at ice fishing.
They all have one thing in their mind: catching sancheoneo or mountain trout.
If you’re not the waiting type when it comes to fishing, you can try catching them with your bare hands.
