As disappointing as the outcome is for those players, when looking at the circumstances surrounding this year’s competition, the decision not to send their team’s over to Iran was not only sensible, but a nobrainer.
“For every overseas tour overseen by Basketball Australia, we conduct a thorough risk assessment in accordance with our travel policy and procedures for all national teams,” Basketball Australia CEO Matthew Scriven shared to The Pick and Roll earlier this week.
“In this case, based on the information available to us and through consultation with the relevant authorities, we had to make the difficult decision not to send our men’s U18 team to the event in Iran.
“This decision was not taken lightly, understanding that this group of talented young men have already missed out on so many development opportunities due to the coronavirus pandemic. However we have a duty of care to all the players, coaches and team staff and we need to consider their wellbeing as a priority.”
Basketball New Zealand declined to comment on the situation.
A quick inquiry into the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade very plainly describes why sending a team to Iran would be a risky proposition. Listed as a Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ destination, Smarttraveller.gov.au notes the threat of arbitrary detention or arrest as high, not to mention a laundry list of concerns regarding safety hazards, civil unrest, crime and terrorism. Quite simply, Basketball Australia has made the only reasonable decision given the situation at hand.
With this in mind, the focus shifts away from the collective decision of Basketball Australia and New Zealand to not send teams to the event and instead, towards the the initial decision from FIBA to host the event in a country like Iran, given current safety concerns. FIBA was approached by The Pick and Roll for comment - none has yet been forthcoming at the time of publishing.
It should be noted that the FIBA Women’s Under 18 Asian Championship is being held separately in Bengaluru, India from 5 to 11 September. As a result, the Australian Gems appear set to participate. A team roster was named on Thursday, following a selection camp at the AIS.
Though both countries’ absence from the event is a disappointment in and of itself, there have also been concerns that their omissions would rule out the chance for either team to play in 2023’s Under 19 World Cup. Per usual qualification rules, the top four nations from the Asia Championship go through to play in the World Cup the following year. In this scenario, it would mean that Australia would miss the Under 19 FIBA World Cup for the first time in the event’s history.
Overall: Do not travel
We've reviewed our advice for Iran. We haven't changed the level of advice. We continue to advise do not travel. If despite our advice you travel to Iran, check COVID-19 entry requirements with your airline before departure. Medical evacuation may be difficult. If you’re in Iran, we continue to recommend you leave. Airlines may cancel or reduce their operations to and from Iran at short notice.
Do not travel to Iran as the security situation remains volatile and there's a high risk you could be arbitrarily detained or arrested.
