1. North Korea masses 50,000 on border
Since the March sinking of South Korea’s warship Cheonan, tensions between the
Koreas have been steadily building. Many have been wondering if they will eventually
come to a boil and lead to further conflict. Adding to peninsular tension is a report
released yesterday stating that the North has completed the deployment of about
50,000 special forces along the border with South Korea. Though the deployment began
two or three years ago, a senior government official told the Yonhap news agency that
seven 7,000-strong divisions are now in place. "The threat that North Korea may
infiltrate special forces for limited warfare has become real," said the official who
requested to remain anonymous. The Defense Ministry has yet to confirm Yonhap’s report,
but the North’s special warfare capabilities were on the agenda at President
Lee Myung-bak’s meeting with 150 top officers from all armed services this week.
Lee said that the South must do a better job to ready itself to tackle asymmetric
military threats. It is hoped that the unprecedented meeting would provide a much
needed shot in the arm to South Korea’s military.

2. Europe debates Islamic face veils
Europe in is in the throes of a tolerance debate as both Belgium and France have made
moves to ban the wearing of full Islamic face veils, also known as burqas, in public.
Belgium’s Parliament voted last week to outlaw the veils and France said it would start
debating a possible ban soon. Both countries have consequently drawn fire from rights
campaigners and Muslim groups. In Italy meanwhile, a 26-year-old Tunisian woman was
fined about $650 for wearing a face veil in the north of the country. Police in the
city of Novara, a stronghold for an Italian anti-immigration political party, stopped
the woman on Friday while she was walking with her husband to prayers. She was reportedly
wearing a black niqab that covered her face but left her eyes exposed. Discussing the
matter, a police official said, “We just enforced a local law that stops people from
covering their face near sensitive places like schools, hospitals or post offices.”
Supporters of such bans say the veils negate the dignity of women. Muslim women,
however, may see things differently from their perspective.
