A scenic hour and a half drive west of Calgary (in Alberta, Canada) leads to one of the most popular national parks in the world: Banff National Park. From here, everywhere you look is a perfect picture from a glossy travel book. Nestled in the majestic mountain scenery, Banff National Park attracts millions of visitors every year.
Banff National Park is Canada’s first national park (and the world’s third). In 1883, on the slopes of Canadian Rocky Mountains, three railway workers discovered a natural hot spring and from there the park was born.
Spanning 6,641 square kilometers of Canadian valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, it is also Canada’s the largest park. The park encompasses small charming towns of Banff and Lake Louise.
Banff and Hot Springs
Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is located in the Rockies, approximately 126km west of Calgary. Located at an elevation of 1,400m to 1,630m, Banff is the community with the second highest elevation in Alberta after Lake Louise.
Located at the end of Mountain Avenue, the Banff Upper Hot Springs are the highest springs in Canada. The hot springs facility consists of a large pool, spa, and café. For over 125 years, travelers have journeyed to Banff to take a dip in the mineral waters. The water temperature is kept between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius, making them an ideal temperature for soaking in year-round.
After a day of adventuring and sightseeing, the hot springs are the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate and make plans for the rest of your stay.
Lake Louise and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Lake Louise is a glacial lake within Banff National Park. It is located 5km west of the Hamlet of Lake Louise and the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). On the eastern shore of Lake Louise is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The original Chateau was gradually built up at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Originally built as a base for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers over 100 years ago, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a year-round mountain resort. The hotel offers guided mountain tours, skiing, hiking and canoe activities. The hotel is also a popular place for special events including hundreds of weddings throughout the year.
Mountains and Wildlife
Other than the town sites of Banff and Lake Louise, and the highways that bisect the park, it is about 93 percent untouched wilderness. The dominant feature is the mountains and wildlife.
Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the park boasts a cornucopia of postcard-perfect mountains. The highest among the mountains in the park is Mount Forbes, which comes in at 3,528m.
The most common wildlife seen in the park are bighorn sheep, deer, elk and caribou. More elusive are the moose, which are on a decline in population. Although sightings are rare, it is important to keep in mind the park is also home to black and grizzly bears, wolves, and coyotes.
On the warm side the park is home to marmots and squirrels. Occasionally beavers can also be found. Bird lovers will want to watch for bald eagles and Canada goose.
