■ 리드선택
리드를 크게 구분하면 전체적으로 딱딱한 편이며 만들기 쉬운 프렌치 컷과 부드럽고 울리기 쉬운 아메리칸 컷 이 두 종류가 있습니다.
보편적으로 비가오는 날 특히 실내에서의 연주등 습도가 높은 곳에서는 딱딱한 프렌치컷 리드가 좋으며 습도가 낮고 건조한 곳(라이트가 강한 스테이지등)에서는 약간 부드러운(악간 얇은) 아메리칸 컷 리드가 좋습니다.
외모로는 나무껍질 부분이 도중에서 일직선으로 커트되어 깍이기 시작하는 것이 프렌치 컷이고 표피가 컷트 되는 측면을 따라 포물선을 그리며 양쪽으로 올라오며 마무리되는 것이 아메리칸 컷이라고 생각하면 거의 실수가 없습니다.
마우스피스와의 궁합은 바로 리드종류와 맞추어 프렌치 컷을 사용하면 프랑스제의 마우스피스(셀마나 반도린등) 수지(에보나이트) 제품이 좋지만,
아메리칸 컷에서는 미국제(Mayer 나 클라우드락키등) 마우스피스나 메탈제 마우스피스가 맞습니다.
어느 쪽이나 다양한 메이커와 종류가 제조되고 있기 때문에 사용하는 마우스피스와 리드의 매칭은 시행 착오를 거치면서 선택해 갈 수밖에 달리 방법은 없습니다. 또 최근에는 합성 섬유제 리드도 외국에서는 판매되고 있으나 국내에는 없는 것으로 알며 매우 품질이 좋은 것도 있습니다.
