<감기의 증상:>
<감기의 경감>

Colds Are Caused by Viruses
More than 200 viruses can cause a cold. These viruses are spread by direct contact, sharing of objects that carry the virus, or coughing/sneezing droplets of virus into the air. The incubation period for a cold-the time between exposure to the virus and the beginning of syndromes -is usually 1 to 3 days. You cannot catch a cold by becoming chilled, having wet feet, or going outdoors with wet hair. However, if you begin to experience the symptoms of a cold, the symptoms may fee l more severe if you are run down or und er emotional stress.
Symtoms of the Common Cold:
Most people experience cold symptoms in a similar manner. The beginning of a col d is rapid, starting with a burning in t he throat or nose, followed by a runny nose, sneezing, and an overall feeling of tiredness and achiness. A sore or scratchy throat may develop early, but usually does not last more than a day. The nos e has a watery, clear discharge with congestion during the first few days of a cold. This is followed by thicker mucus, perhaps with a cough. The cough is usual ly not severe with a cold, but it can continue for up to two weeks even though t he other cold symptoms disappear. Patients with respiratory diseases such as bronchitis or asthma may have a worsening o f their symptoms during a cold. Most of the symptoms of a cold disappear within four to 10 days after they begin.
Best Prevention Methods:
There is no cure for the common cold. Th e best prevention is to wash hands frequ ently, and cover a sneeze or cough with a tissue, since these simple steps will cut down on virus transmission. No vaccines are available, although researchers have developed vaccines that work against some viruses that cause colds. Scientists are also looking for an effective antiviral drug that would work against all the virus strains that cause a cold, without causing side effects. Although large doses of vitamin C (up to 8 grams a day) have been studied in patients expose d to a cold virus, they are not effective in preventing a cold from developing. If taken on the first day of symptoms, l arge doses of vitamin C will shorten the length of the cold symptoms. Echinacea is widely used in Europe and the U.S. to reduce the symptoms of a cold. The evidence on zinc as a cold remedy is still inconclusive.
Relieving a Cold:
The typical recommendations for cold suf fers are aimed at helping the bodys def enses fight the cold. This means drinki ng plenty of fluids to maintain moisture , using a cool mist humidifier to incre ase humidity in the air, eating healthy meals, and resting as much as possible. Many nonprescription products are availa ble to reliever a cold. However, they wi ll not prevent, cure, or shorten the len gth of a cold. Fever and pain medication s, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can be used to ease sore throat, fever, and aches. Aspirin should not be used in children or teens due to its association with Reyes syndrome. A high fever during a cold, or one that continues for several days, is probably not caused by the cold virus. Antibiotics are not effective in treating a cold since colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria. However, they may be effective in treating the complications of a cold, such as an ear infection, sinus infection or bacterial pneumonia. For most of us, a cold is a minor inconvenience. However, if symptoms continue more than 10 days, a fever continues more than two days, or a severe sore throat, deep cough, difficulty breathing, or ear pain develop, see your doctor.
